View Full Version : Chain snapped
My chain has just snapped on the A329 and oil is coming out from around the sprocket area. Life sucks by the side of the road, but here's to a rebuild thread!

well I've a suspicion why, but as for the oil leak, if you're lucky it's just the clutch transfer rod snapped and the hole it goes in leaking, if not you've done damage to the casing itself, unfortunately the chain/ rod or casing aren't fixable at the side of the road, hope you have recovery or know a man with a van.
Cheers Mark.
I'm alright thanks mate, recovery should be here in a bit
Thanks anyway!
Mark, chain was well lubed, adjusted correctly and was replaced just before I got the bike and hasn't done more than 4000 miles. I can't think of a reason, but I am willing to bow to superior knowledge:)

I'm assuming the fact your'e typing on your phone casually means you came to a nice steady hault ...somehow..?

when was the last time it was looked at mileage and and time?, have you had to adjust it recently? was it endless of riveted ?, I've never found a chain to just "fail" in recent years, in fact most "O" rings are warrented for at least a year or 12,000 miles, was it fitted by a dealer ?
Yep:) boy do I feel lucky !!!
Heard a bang, instantly grabbed the clutch, nothing, looked in my mirror and saw smoke so hit the kill switch and pulled to the side:)
Tom
I had my rear wheel out about 3 weeks ago so was cleaned in paraffin and heavily lubed with scottoiler oil and adjusted then. I checked it and lubed it on Sunday. Will have to check on the paperwork when exactly I was fitted but I think it was a dealer as it has full dealer history. I can only think it is because I had a split link not a rivet link.

was it fitted with a scottoiler or just that oil used ?, whilst I myself wouldn't recommend a split (or spring) link, as long as the spring part was still on it shouldn't have broken, normally if all else is good about the chain and it was manually lubed it means a link was missed, it drys and stiffens up and then it runs hot and that will be the point of weakness, the rest of the chain can be perfect, but without the chain it's just a guess all be it an educated one.
Cheers Mark.
It doesn't have a scottoiler fitted just used the oil. The spring was still there on Sunday, I can only think I missed a link somehow and it got hot etc.

easily done, it's one bit of the bike that gets more attention than any other from me, I've had a couple of chains snap, once was my fault the other wasn't, but lesson learned from each, still hope it's only the transfer rod and chain you need to replace, the rod for a curvy (presume it's the same for a pointy) is about £11 as I ordered one not so long ago.
Cheers Mark.

Unlucky Tom! Glad you didn't go skidding down the road. What was it like when it snapped? Anything horrific happen, or was it a safe coast to a halt?
I believe his rolling burn-out into wheelie was brought to an abrupt halt much to the disappointment of the girls outside the 6th form college.

personally i would never use a split link on a modern bike over 125cc,and if this was fitted by a bike shop they need a good telling off, most modern bikes have rubbing strips on the swing arm that the chain rubs on and this can wear the false link or if put on backward pull it off
Looks it was like the split link,
Unfortunately it was nothing spectacular, massive bang then smoke and i killed the engine. Looks like i have snapped the clutch rod so ordering one from work on Monday.
Also need new rear left fairing as the chain ripped through it and new rear indicator as it was ripped off. Chain guard also went.
Could have been much worse but still annoyed.
Oh well couple of weeks and I will be back up and running fully..
Thanks
Tom

That sucks. I would've hoped the chain guard may have kept it contained, but I suppose it's pretty thin plastic. How was the swing arm? Scratched to feck?
Great, another thing for me to be paranoid about

Great, another thing for me to be paranoid about a good chain that is riveted up rarely brake, false links are for push bikes and lawnmowers
That will be the last split link I EVER get!
Found half the link behind the front sprocket. The swing arm is fine also :)

so you've had the front sprocket cover off then, any damage to the casing or just the rode?
Casing is fine just the rod :) the bracket that holds the clutch cable in place took a hit but looks like it saved the casings luckily!

cool, sounds like you got away lightly there, did snapped bit of the rod come out cleanly? so nothing dropped inside the engine ? and remender to grease the rod up well when you replace it as a dry one will weep oil a bit.
Cheers Mark
Haven't looked properly, that's tomorrow's job. Is it easy to do? I will be following the Haynes manual to the word as I do it!

the haynes won't cover broken bits, it's a service task manual, so making sure the busted bits are removed right and nothing is floating around to cause problems is up to you, but as long as the bit of rod still in the casing isn't shattered then it should pull out all in one bit, you'll also have to make sure it hasn't torn the seal.
Cheers Mark.
Sorry to hear about this mate. You had some quick reactions there that probably saved a lot of money, and possibly some injuries. It could have been worse.
got my new push rod and seal, C+S kit coming tomorrow with chain guard and front sprocket cover.
New plastic on friday/monday. Not too long until I am mobile again and not using the bus to get to work! :)

First ever ride out on my SV the chain snapped. Had no recovery or anything sorted as i has just got the bike. Just committed to an overtake and just felt like i lost all power. was doing about 70mph but luckily the chain just slid out of the cogs and onto the road. sat freezing my ass off on the moors in the winter trying to sort recovery out was a nightmare! and when they (AA) say they will get to you in 1 hour what they mean is they will send a car over to you in 1 hour to try and "fix" the problem and when they cant you have to wait another 4 hours for a recovery truck to turn up. The dealer was about 1 hours drive away but when i rang up the next day they did say it was a freak incident as it had just been serviced and they sent me a new chain in the post which i had to fit myself. still felt a **** at the side of the road with no shelter for that long though

Did anyone pull over? (Question to fergie and Tom) I've found on the few occasions I've stopped at the side of the roads in random places, people have pulled over to make sure I was ok. Could just be I'm from a nice area though. I would imagine in London or Manchester, people would probably pull over just to shoot you and take your wallet while filming it on their iPhone.

Don't you mean filming it on YOUR iPhone (that they just stole off you)

I came off in the snow a couple of years ago and whilst clearly straining like a penguin trying to **** out a hippo to lift the bike I had easily a dozen cars drive past before someone stopped to ask if I were ok or needed a hand. The woman driving right behind me did nothing, just drove round me laid in the road.
Then again I've pulled over to sneak a ****, and had someone pull over to ask if everything was ok before I were even off the bike. They said "I worried them with my haste to pull off the road"
It probably has some bearing on the time of day of the incident and how dejected you're looking. I imagine if you're sat at the side of the road sobbing then soon enough some one may give you a friendly kick and tell you to man the **** up.

Ahhh, that'd be annoying Matt, especially if someone follows you into the shrubbery where you're there holding your todger head back.
"Sorry mate, I thought you'd lost a kitchen in the bushes" :D
To be fair, the times people pulled over for me was when my backpack opened up on an A road and I was riding up and down stopping in ridiculous places (such as a on dual carriage way) picking up my stuff.

I know its a derail, but my sister used to see a bloke (read knob) who had an RSV millie, used to ride it like it was stolen at any opportunity. I'd bumped into him at a garage we both use so we left together and went for the indirect route home. Only problem was he didnt zip up his pocket and I got hit by a flying packet of smokes, I opened my throttle to catch him and tell him only to see him take this as a challange at the land speed record.
I tried to flag him down etc but too late, first his lighter, then his phone bounced down onto the road smashing to pieces. Made me laugh because like I said he was a knob but I did feel a little sorry for him when I caught him up and handed over various bits of blackberry.
