View Full Version : Push Bike Helmet
Been doing fair few miles on the push bike recently and think it might be an idea to get a helmet.
I have a mountain bike but haven't taken it off road so far, although I do plan to. But most of my miles are going to be on the road.
I know there are a few cyclists on here so what would you recommend?
Don't want to spend too much but don't want rubbish either.
Cheers.

something comfortable within your price range,
like bike helmets they are tested to a set standard, other than that you pay more for lighter more fancy models and less for clumsy less sexy no.s.
mine is a Bell from asda for 14£ if I drop it scratch it or break it I wont loose sleep..
I might upgrade if I can drag my **** from the sofa and use the push bike more..

I was in the same boat. Wanted something decent but not expensive. Ended up with a specialised one from Evans for £29 which wasnt too bad and is dead comfy.

Personally I'd spend a bit more on one of these. I'm only saying that because I've been unlucky enough to test it out and would have been dead if not wearing it. I had the giro xen when my head met the bonnet of a car :)
Also. What is the point of these cyclists carrying their helmet on the handlebars? Do they expect to fall into it?

Get a decent one, your head tends to hit the floor more on push bikes for some reason, I think its cos you can go over the bars quite easily.
My friend recently had a crash wearing an expensive Kask helmet, he landed on his head / shoulder. Head fine (helmet is toast) but has barely ridden for 3 weeks due to the damage to his shoulder.
I have a Giro Stylus helmet which I find comfortable, light and well ventilated.

One that fits you and that you will wear and is comfortable.
IME the only thing you get with a more expensive helmet, is better fit, better comfort and better vents.
I have a MET, I previously had a MET which is in 4 pieces now after I went over the bonnet of car, I'd not ride without my helmet now.
Go to a bike shop and try some on, they are a bit like motorbike helmets in that different manufacturers helmets fit in different ways. I find the Giro really uncomfortable, but both my cycling buddies have Giro's and get on fine with them.

Like motorbike helmets the fit is whats important here. I wanted a Fox Flux but nothing fits my head better than the Bell helmets. Had the cheap Bell Ukon for years and just upgraded it to a Variant.
Get a decent make you cant go wrong, they go up in price the more air vents and lighter they are.

I do a lot of quick XC and bought a fox flux but i may move on to a POC
Have a Giro Xen as well, went over the bars and landed on my face / head and no damage other than nose scuffed! Recomended & crash tested.
If you know what you want have a look at chain reaction cycles, excellent price & service.

Got 2 Giro's for road cycling, one has more vents for summer weather (ha what summer) but both very comfy.
Had Mets before, but not as comfy as the Giro's
But I had a Lidl £9.99 jobbie which was well spec'd and comfy, did its job when I fell off my MTB.
More Vents = higher price :p

I have a Giro Xen , use it on Road as well as my MTB , nicely ventilated and fits very well , removable liner to go in the wash . Would buy one again , mine is the first gen and it`s getting on a bit now .
more for less again.. have an aldi special for those special rides in the woods and a briko arrow for the road. Will go for a Bell next as it was dead comfy last time I tried in the shops.
Giro helmets seem to be the way to go then. Looked a few up and they look good. Will try some on and see how I get on.
Thanks again mighty org

I've got a spesh one which was about £30. I always wear it despite looking like a dingbat, and on thursday night last week I had a lowside at about 18mph up the riverside - absolutely smashed my head into the stone slabs but the helmet meant I only had to deal with mashed knee/hip/elbow and a sore neck. Woulda probably been concussion at best or cracked skull at worst. Defo worth looking like a doylem.
Just been to Halfords, they have a 20% sale on, tried on a few Giro helmets and they didn't fit that well so ended up with a MET Terra.

MET are a good brand as well . MET and GIRO are a bit like the Shoei and Arai of the cycling world , if one doesn`t fit you then the other brand stands a chance of fitting the bill . I peeled the labels off my Matte Black GIRO and re-arranged the letters to spell ORGI ................ doesn`t get me any invites though
