The blanking plates should have come with the seat cowl.
The grab handle is not a structurally integral part of the back of the bike
Here is a photo of the seat cowl fitted with infills; http://forums.sv650.org/album.php?albumid=549&pictureid=5401

I have a cowl and have left the rail on for a few reasons. Firstly, I can't find the black in-fills ANYWHERE! Secondly I have to shove my bike around and reverse into the garage and using the rail makes it easier.
Lastly, my cowl hooks into the lip on the grab rail so if you removed it and didn't replace it with anything wouldn't the cowl rattle a bit?

The blanking plates are part of a kind of bar that bolts on to where the grab rails goes and provides a place for the cowl to "hook" in to

Yeh I know - thats why I said that you'd presumably have to run with either the grab rail OR the plates.
Earlier in the post someone mentioned running with neither.

I think he meant without the handle, not without the blanking plates

Aye that's where the confusion lies as on my bike, the handle and the wee clip for the cowl/seat is one piece so if you take the handle off the cowl won't have anything to clip into.

We are confusing each other here Kev.
When I read the post from Leebex, I read that they are saying about removing the handle and putting the blanking plates on for a pointy, thereby the blanking plates would give the hook, whereas with a curvey the recommendation is to keep the grip even with the cowl
