.. Groups of bikers when your on your own?

It made me think the other day when I was out riding on my tod having negotiated a sunny spell that I couldn't decide what to do when a group of around 12 bikers passed me on the opposite side of the road then it was too late and I just looked like an arrogant biker!

Now 1 biker no problem just nod, or if your in a group you don't look like a knob if you don't do anything.. So there lies the dilemma...

What do you guys do to acknowledge large groups of riders?

George :)

Pop a massive wheelie .... Joking I wave usually if there's loads of them , if I'm getting a move on then nothing

Mostly people will nod or just raise an arm.

Yeah I put my hand up if there's loads as my head would fall off if I nodded to all of them.

Nod at the first, if a really large group middle and then at the end. If you nodded at every one you would look like churchill so doing it this way means everyone in the group see's you.

Waving would work and not something I have tried as I haven't been riding long. I suppose if your on a corner waving wouldn't be the best but on a straight road would be good.

I found the best thing to do is one really slow exaggerated nod. To do it right, pretend you're trying to spot a plane high in the sky. Then this plane slowly falls out of the sky. Follow it with your head until it crashes into the school bus in front of you on the road. Should take about 10 seconds and result in a smooth long nod suitable for bike groups up to 23.

I nod to the first which should cover at least the first three, then do another nod for the ones behind.

Just a slow forward nod with your eyes still on the road ahead , if they see it then all`s good , if they don`t .... your hardly likely to bump into them at the Gentleman`s Club and get pulled on your lack of Etiquette

turn around and over take them all while doing a wheelie, while having you leather trousers down and a smiley face on your bum in marker pen.

Stick a leg out. They still appreciate that!

As part of a 50+ bike rideout today i have to say most riders coming in the oposite direction just had the startled rabbit expression (not one nod).

I generally just raise my hand until they are all past me - road conditions allowing.

common thing to just get ignored now, gave 2 nods today, got one back.

Although to be fair, when im in the car I dont go waving and nodding at every car going the other way, as essentially when on the bike im simply using a form of transport that other people also use.

And how do I know the person behind that visor isnt an axe murderer, rapist etc, they might be a right arrogant tosser who I wouldnt say hi to if I walked past them on the pavement.

I got a few nods as I was waiting by the dual carriage way in my gear today, waiting to signal to my lift to take the next left. My bike had broken down in the carpark at work.

Gave me something to do.

I'm just visualising you doing that and at about 8 seconds you've just rear-ended the car in front!;)

I tend to do the front, middle and end nods for big groups

I do hope that is past 45 degrees , otherwise you get this look

Got the most friendly ever nod this evening on the way home from the local bike meet.
An old chap on an old brit bike/sidecar outfit, flashed lights then the cheeriest big wave and grin, now thats how it should be done

I appreciated finding this thread having done a search for 'etiquette',

I passed a matching blue pointy in richmond who gave me a big nod and having owned my SV and first big bike for less than 2 weeks I assumed I had cocked up and left an indicator on or was going the wrong way in a 1 way system.

If he is on this forum I apologise for not returning the nod, sticking my leg out or doing a reverse wheelie with my trousers down and appropriate cheek motif.

I'm really struck by the general support riders have for each other and glad to be part of the team!

You say that, come back when you have nodded to a few BMW GS bikers.... And Harley riders.

I'm assuming they are extra friendly. Should I give them a 2 finger salute and ride off really quickly?

Do what I do, stand on the pegs and wave both hands in an eccentric manner, for added effect if your visor isn't tinted then stare and do crazy eyes

I can't say i have tried that one just yet

I tend to opt for the hand up (Well past 45 degrees ;))
