My first car was a 1600E cortina on L plates when I was about 19. I thought £90 for insurance was extortionate.

I remember all the cars you've listed, but have only driven a fair few of them and owned a handful when they were worthless bangers ('66 998 Cooper, '72 1275 Cooper S Mk3 that I still technically own, Granada Mk2 2.3, Cortina 2000E Mk3, Lotus Cortina Mk1 and owned a 924S Porsche for a few months too) and had three of them as company cars (Accord, Picasso and Passat).

With regard to the Jaguar, why settle for the lowly 3.4 when they made a cracking 3.8 manual with overdrive? Buy the best, don't settle for less.

Buy the best, don't settle for less.

Too true, only go for top of the range or hot hatch versions myself even on banger cars, cant stand pauper spec cars.

Poverty spec cars for me are worthless - I wouldn't buy anything now that didn't have air-con, full electric windows and remote central locking as an absolute minimum. You can pick up bangers with these features for next to nothing nowadays.
