View Full Version : Rear Brake seized!

Was on my way to work today when I used the rear brake to slow down. When I pressed on the brake I heard a loud click but the brake worked just like normal and after checking nothing fell off I carried on. a minute or two down the road the bike felt weird, like it was struggling so I pulled over and checked my rear brake as the same thing happened a few months back with my front right caliper.

What I found were a faint black smear on both sides of the disc and it was extremely hot. :smt013

All my calipers were cleaned a couple of months back with the front right one having been rebuilt completely so why has this happened already? I had planned to clean them again this weekend, looks like that has been moved forward.

Just a little peed off. That is all.

took about 4months of winter riding for my sv callipers to gum up. I ended up buying a spare set of callipers and servicing the spares at my convenience then just swapping them over when I noticed the drag start.

Have finally managed to remove the brake pads. The pistons are fine, they both move freely. The reason my rear brake seized was the guide pins (think thats what they are called) were rusted. One was so rusted that I had to cut it into 3 pieces so that I could hammer it through and actually remove the pads.

All I have to do now is give it a good clean, re-fit and all should be sorted. :D

strip and grease the pistons/seals while your at it. i know they move freely now but winter is coming and you don't want to be doing it in the cold. prevention is better than cure.

That's a good point, maybe I should get off my **** and do my rear brake, after all it was making a funny noise on the journey home earlier
