View Full Version : Well hello there...
While searching for SV650 stuff online came across this forum so thought id sign up and say hello.
Passed my test Saturday just gone and bought my sv650s that afternoon :) already done around 250 mile on it since picking it up and loving every minute of it.
Needs a little bit of work doing to it (looks like the previous owner dropped it as upper and lower fairings are scratched on both sides but got someone coming to give me a quote on respraying these) and as its been sat not really doing much for over a year the carbs need cleaning as its back firing a bit (goes in for a clean this weekend)
So far I've done about 250 mile on it since Saturday and loved every second of it (even the rain) and is making my commute to work (Dunstable to London) much more fun than being sat on a cramped train.....

How dooo
Not another one. Bugger off, were full! ;)
Seriously, welcome Woogie. Have alook for secondhand pannels on Ebay. More then likely cheaper to buy them then get them sprayed. Also, check out new prices as a reference as depending on what colour you have, its not a cheap spray job (3 colours Primer/midcoat/gelcoat))

Welcome, ride safe
Well Bikes going back to the dealers this weekend to have a carb clean done on it and to have a plastic weld done on the left upper fairing as the indicator keeps falling out after about 50mph or a bump due to a cracked fairing.... sigh..... At least I hope its because of the cracked fairing... If not they can have the bike back and ill go buy another one....Still 5 hours in Swindon on my own this Saturday that are supposed to be being spent for my birthday.. JOY

hello mate, welcome to the forum, well done on the pass and ride safe.
Thx :)
Having issues with the bike and as per usual the dealer is being an ass...... sigh....already got to take it back and he wants to get it fixed or examined before will consider giving me a refund.
Basically I went in last Saturday to look at the bike and was obvious it had been dropped by the previous owner as fairings on the left side were scuffed... Only superficial damage so didnt care as was likely to drop it myself at some point. Started the bike up and it backfired, guy assured me it was because it had been sat and probably had a bit of a dodgy fuel in the lines or they weren't being fully burnt off but a good run would clear it out. Took it out for a test drive and it seemed out, backfired a tiny bit but that didnt concern me due to what he had said. I looked over the bike as best as a complete rookie and with a pretty untrained eye and decided i'd take the bike, filled it up and had a steady drive home (around 100 mile) as it was my first time riding it and it was my first time properly on a motorway...where I filled it up again ready for work Monday... Queue monday morning, Bike was a bit crappy to start and felt like it was bogging down a bit, backfired still when slowing down and when at highish revs and on top of that the left indicator fell off when hitting about 70mph and a nice gust of wind hit me.... pulled over to sort that and it happened again, then again and then again. Examined the fairing a bit more closely and noticed that where the indicator connects the fairing was cracked on the inside and was coming away meaning I couldnt actually put the indicator in properly and this STILL keeps falling out. On top of that I am unable to get the tax disc holder off due the screws being rusted solid, and on top of that its where the chain guard is meaning that if it needs any work doing those screws have to be drilled off meaning more expense.
I called him regarding this and requesting a refund at which point I pretty much got told to go away, bring the bike in and HE will get it sorted and fixed but no refund unless he decides its financially beneficial for him. Spoken to CAB who have advised me that I pretty much am entitled to the goods and can refuse the bike on the fact the quality of goods is not up to standard and that acceptance hasnt taken place. I told him this again today at which point he said that he would expect a letter from my solicitor and made it known that it would be dragged out as much as possible without actually saying as much..... He wants the bike back this Saturday but will not be able to get it looked at till Monday due to no mechanics working on a Saturday (strange as ive always had my work done on Saturdays due to HAVING A JOB!!!!) but basically said because I wanted the bike on the day there's not a lot he can do as I didn't give him chance to inspect the bike and went on the fact it had a MOT (never mentioned a lack of inspection to me when I was there). This means that I am now not likely to get a refund, get work done I don't want, be unhappy with the bike and have to cough up the best part of £30 a day for 2/3 days just to get to work..... SIGH!!!!!

My mother works with the cab they can act on your behalf. Go in with a good case and any paperwork and they'll sort it for you. As soon as the dealer gets letters showing intent to take to court you'll get a refund ;)
Bike was sold as sound, therefore goods are not as described! Do you have the advert or receipt?

Yeah I have the advert as its still up on Auto trader
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201225476307745/sort/default/usedbikes/model/sv/make/suzuki/page/3/postcode/lu55ed/radius/1500?logcode=p
I didn't pay that amount for it either btw....
I was advised by CAB today to give him a letter when i go in this weekend saying he is perfectly allowed to inspect the bike and have it inspected by his mechanic but NO work is to go ahead without my say so and I still have the right to reject any work they want to do if I feel it is too much. Bike was backfiring something rotten on way home today and it doesn't quite sound right. Going to try and record it in a moment and upload it so I can get an opinion from people who may know better than myself lol

As the advert doesn't describe any of these faults your covered. Legally.
Once he calls you up to say this this and this need doing just say you like the refund and will take your custom elsewhere. Unless you want that bike. SV's are everywhere!
Yeah, It doesn't even mention the scratches that are on it, I agreed the scratches were OK but then on further inspection seeing screws snapped off and trying to change my tax disc and screws being seized and threaded its just frustrating.

You can hear the popping and backfiring there..... that's after a 40 mile ride as well so bike is well and truly warm. It did that when He first started it but he assured me it was either bad fuel or just needed a good run in after not being used for a year... in hindsight I should have walked away but you live and you learn

Yea it's not the end of the world.
Life is a learning curve. All I've been saying is legally you have the right to return if you want. You could also just keep it and let him fix your problems free of charge. Perhaps ask for a partial refund as the price paid was for 100% of a bike and you only got around 80%
Well he has already agreed to have the cosmetic stuff fixed and the engine (carb cleaning if thats all it is) sorted but as its backfiring at low/high and idle he is a tad worried about that one... I'm nervous about keeping the bike now as this is supposed to have had a full service 200 mile ago with 2 new tyres, chain and sprockets (all totalling about £800) but that was a year ago as well, and now im just worried as to what else will go wrong with it or ill find wrong with it....its just frustrating
Quick question.... How hot is the silver frame going to get on say a 40 mile run? noticed after getting home last 2 days the fan has been going crazy on the bike and that frame is crazy hot to the touch.... as we as a crap load of heat coming out from just under the tank (where the rad is ) but I can feel it on my face.

If you want,
Bring the bike to my workshop and I will do a full written inspection for you. this will help you legally and you can chuck it in the guys face!
Bikes gone in for him to look at today. Want to get it looked at afterwards to ensure it definitely is safe and the work has been done to the correct standard so may be in contact afterwards.

Hello and good luck. Be real firm with this company, don't give 'em an inch. No used bike is perfect but defo' make sure it's fit for purpose.

Hi Woogie and welcome.
IMO, I wouldn't even dream of keeping the bike whether he repairs it or not.
I wouldn't trust him as it appears he has already lied to you.
Plus he seems to be keen to 'repair' it for you himself, which to me spells trouble.
I am sure all the bikers on here would agree that this is your life at stake (and some people who sell bikes just don't seem to have a conscience as to whether they end it or not).
Get your money back and one of the nice mechanics on here to inspect any future purchases.
Ride safe x
I have been trying to get my money back but it doesn't seem as straight forward as that :( and he seem's fairly keen on dragging it out if I do try and get my money back. Unfortunately I do not have the money to go and buy another bike as well as this one while I fight for the money.
Just got a phone call from him and he has said that nearly all the problems I've been having have been fixed apart from the backfiring/popping for 2 reasons #1 the bike has been mapped (or some such) to an aftermarket exhaust and he has said he has a Scorpion end can there that he can get put on the bike which should solve the issue and #2 SV650s ALWAYS pop when you shut them off due to the face they are Vtwin engines its just the nature of the beast but mine does pop more than he would expect.

What model SV is it?
If its been mapped there will more than likely be a Power Commander in there (on a pointy)
Old one mate... believe its a 1999/2000 one (not sure on exact model)

It won't be mapped as its carbs.
You will get a little bit of popping on the overrun, but not loud bangs etc... (unless is about 200 mm long)
You would if its a full system leo vince or M4, but they have the bore of a drain pipe and fire flames on demand
Just to cover the other side, the guy's trying to put things right, carbs get gummed up, choke cables stick. This doesn't make this a "bad bike" as such, we get plenty of people on here with similar symptoms so try not to panic, but do make sure that you note down what problems you've had, and what's been said and done.
If it doesn't get fixed in a time scale you're happy with then you can use this to apply pressure.
Jambo
Aye i agree Jambo he is trying to out stuff right so fair play to him....
Well just got the bike back and he wasnt able to switch the can over as a screw got stuck and they needed the bike for longer to try and get it removed but i needed the bike back. Since getting it back the bike seems better and less popping/banging but I had to get petrol after about 5 mins of picking the bike up. Clutched it to start the bike.... All ok, Put it in first and bike stalled..... it then did this another 3 times and no the side stand wasn't down as thats what I thought the first time.... to get it into first I had to put it to about 3/4k revs then bang it in first. After that everything was... cue 100 mile later when im now home.... Parking the bike in the garden I put it in Neutral then decided I didnt like where it was so put it back in first at which point it jolted forward like it was suddenly at the biting point, engine started dying like it was at the biting point with no revs and I then applied the brake and the bike then settled down. It then did this a few more times with me struggling to get it into neutral (had to use the kill switch then bang it down to neutral as bike refused to go while ticking over)... Its done that a few times with Neutral and with these kinds of gear boxes ive never really thought much of it as the bike I learnt to ride on could be a bitch to either get into gear (have to let clutch out then back in while in neutral if bikes been run for a while) or a pain to get into Neutral... but the whole hitting the bike point and stalling in first was news to me.

That needs the clutch and chain adjusted and will be spot on
Ah that's good to know :-) thanks
Hello! I'm sorry to read you've been having a hard time.
I noticed that the ad says the bike's totally standard which he has since said it isn't (mapped?! or whatever). That might give you a little more ammo.
In all honesty I'm pretty happy with whatever he has done to the bike as it seems to be running a lot better and I gave it a good thrashing on the 100 mile back from Swindon and was fine on the 40 mile trip into work today. Now just to get the chain and clutch adjusted then I should be good for the next 6 months before I get bored or my back gives out :)
