So, we 'av a new gaff.

MYC has been busy buying loads of female sh*te, the kitchen has sprouted loads of cooking type stuff, and I'm sure there didn't used to be any cushions in't lounge... Or a settee for that matter.

Anyroad I've been busy with the more important matter. The GARAGE!

It's a fair decent size, just over 3 x 6m.

I got some johnstones flortred from the local friendly paint sniffer and have just done the first coat of it. Now to figure out the best way to fit everything in for greatest convenience.

Need to build a new, bigger bench and some racking, a noise isolating box for the compressor, etc :)

Nice

That brings back memories when we moved into our current house, the garage is what sold it to me, 10.5ft wide, full length of the house and it was empty.

At the time i was into modding my mk2 golf and could put it up on stands and be able to walk easily all the way around it with room to spare at the front and back :)

On a different note, you don't need any linbin type boxes and racks do you?

Ive got a load i need to sell cheap to the right person, i cant fit anymore in my garage and ive still got two cardboard boxeds full of them, all different sizes.

Have you got nekked in the garage yet? Needs to be done.

Congrats on the new house btw.

Congratulations on the new place.

Assuming the opening is at the end furthest from the house, that corner next to the door looks ideal for the compressor. If you're going to put it in an insulated box to deaden the sound, don't forget to add a fan and some vents. They generate a fair bit of heat when they're running.

I've found that cheap kitchen worktops work well for bench tops. 18mm WBP ply is cheaper and stronger, but it looks crap after a couple of oil spills.

Yes renting which is a shame as otherwise I'd have 10 more sockets and another 3 lights in there.

I've found that cheap kitchen worktops work well for bench tops.

Thats what I used to make mine. Some 2*4 bolted to the wall as a frame and a slab of B&Q's cheapest kitchen top to work from. The plastic coating keeps the oil in one place and if it gets damaged to much, I'll just unbolt it throw it way and stick a new one on top.

is your landlord happy for you to build your workshop? if you have to bolt stuff to the walls and make ventilation holes etc.

i'm gussing that this one doesn't have a huge sloping driveway!!

No ventilation required.

He's said basically do what you want inside the place with regards hanging pictures and shelves, can't really see him complaining. Especially as I'm building any racking from #ahem# recycled timber so it can be left in place when we go.

It slopes a little bit on the way in, but then there's a big flat area that would fit 3 decent vans or about 40 bikes!

Propane heaters are bad. Too wet.

Agree fix the gaps. Insulate the back of that cold trap door and the roof space and get a waste oil heater. I would have liked to have said bypass the meter and run power for your machine tools and a big electric heater but that would be naughty and should only be done by hydroponic herb cultivators who have the specialist skills needed to extract free electrickery.

But don't make it too warm as MYC will then want to store stuff that wont fit in the house. My garage now contains freezers, dryers, kids toys. Let this be a warning to you. Declare it a male zone. she has the house, you have the garage.

Cool, man caves rock.

I have amended the agreement me and GruntyGiggles have, if it's of any use to you both please print and sign

I {YC} do understand that I am prohibited from being in the kitchen belonging to {MYC}.
I {MYC} am prohibited from being in the garage belonging to {YC}.

This agreement is to be adhered to at all times unless in an emergency. Should such an emergency occur a verbal request will be sufficient to allow temporary access, the following two are examples of permissible emergency's

{MYC} - "Love come and taste this"
{YC} - "MYC, come here quick and pull this bike off me"

That's about the only thing I would like to knock a hole in't wall for, I've a bit of experience extracting useful heat from the sludgy depths of waste engine oil and could easily knock something up to burn it relatively clean.

I don't really use that much 'leccy, even the lathe motor only draws 700w at full load. Biggest are probably the welders but I don't do that much.

It will be so luxury to have my oxy acet close enough to the drive to actually use!

correct punctuation applied to your sentence so that it doesn't read like a naughty phrase!!!

make sure you get the local fire brigade over to do a free assessment on your property then they will be aware, if there is any fires in the local area, that you have oxy stuff nearby.

One thing I do need to sort is a clean and covert way to do castings. I've got a waste oil fired furnace but it's a great monster of a thing that belches forth great fire and brimstone. Probably wouldn't go down well.

And right when I need a casting doing for a waste oil centrifuge for the van o' doom.

Got a freezer in kitchen, don't do dryers and no kids. Garage still partly mine, muahaha :smt116

We have a very understanding neighbour...he be the landlord so we do have to be fairly considerate but he's been sound so far.

What ya c casting.? Only really makes sense for multiples off from experience. Lots of places that might be able to do it on the cheap and less risk to yourself.

On a hobby scale it costs nowt, it's having somewhere to do it. For some reason people perceive tipping a pot of molten metal into a box full fo damp sand to be somewhat dangerous?

I could make from billet, but it would be an expensive billet. 200 or so diameter, 75 or longer aluminium, most of it ending up machined out.

monkey
23-07-12, 07:37 PM
I'm sure you don't need advise about setting up your man garage but I've got a few wide metal filing cabinets in mine like this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Drawer-Wide-Metal-Filing-Cabinets-/150860131878?pt=UK_BOI_Office_Equipment_Supplies_O ffice_Furniture_ET&hash=item231ff6ee26) and they're very handy. I've also got some of the tall metal cupboards but they're more for security.

As a 16yr old I spent a month in the training foundry. whilst there was a proper cupola that got fired up occasionally. For us pups we had to stick to aluminum. A gas powered furnace. Start by sifting 10 ton of molding sand between 9 of you, 3 gangs of 3, one on riddle, 2 on shovels. Every morning before breakfast. Bacon butties well earned. Then banging patterns into the sand, pouring the aluminum and the fun of seeing what appeared.

This early experienced served me well as during my design/make project (epicyclic gearbox demonstration model that could lock sun/planet or annulus) I was able to use the training foundry to cast carriers etc.

From that time what I had most respect for was the pattern makers, having also spent some time in the pattern makers shop there was some great skill there.

Why the above drivel. If industry didn't mind 16 year old playing with molten aluminum why should anyone consider an engineering graduate in his own workshop casting aluminum dangerous?

This stuff works great this is just a random website not sure where my dad ordered it from. You fit it yourself or get someone to do it very simple to do.

http://www.dynotile.co.uk/

Its easy to clean and is none slip i think depending on the texture you get.

Customizable aswell where my dad bought from he could get a Honda logo put into one of the tiles if he wanted. Its pricey but worth every penny.
