Afternoon all.
Okay, i usually game on xbox usually stuff like 1st and 3rd person shooters (CoD, Battlefield, Sniper etc) but I've started to grow out of it a bit now and stared to get into things like Skyrim, Oblivion, LOTR but hard to enjoy on xbox.
Started playing LOTR online on my laptop and its so much better!
Thinking about converting to PC gaming now that i have found sense.
Which is easier/cheaper? Building my own up which will take time or buying one myself and just buying a good graphics card and RAM etc...
Advice?

build your own, initail investment will be anywhere from £600-1000 depending on how much you have to spend then just change your core components every 2-3 years as they become out of date.
I'm just about to upgrade my 3 year old Motherboard , CPU and RAM and that alone is going to cost me £570.00
I got a new card at xmass costing just under £200
Off the top of my head if you want to play decent games at hi-ish Res with a solid 60FPS you will need to shell out at least £650 on components for a half decent gaming rig.
Welcome to PC gaming you wont look back unless you run out of money far superior to console gaming.
You would probably need to spend a little bit more than £650 for to play things with a solid 60fps.... I paid £1300 about 8/9 months ago and going back and playing older and modern games such as Skyrim, Splinter Cell conviction, fallout etc I cant play them on max with a solid 60fps, it will always jump around between 20-50 (may also be due to the system issues I'm currently having) on a 21" monitor at 1680x1050.
As said though you can buy pretty much everything for around £600 (not including a decent monitor). My rig above included things like a SSD for my Os and what not which you probably wouldnt be looking at for a entry level machine.
My parts were
Nvidia GTX 570 Phantom 1280mb gfx Card
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-143-GW
8 Gig ram, I7 3.4ghz Sandybridge clocked to 4.2 and Mobo bundle (no longer on sale)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-082-OE&groupid=43&catid=2053&subcat= (Similar bundle to the one I got)
OCZ Vertex 3 120gb SSD (PAIN IN THE ASS as was old firmware so caused me no end of issues)
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-071-OC
1000w PSU
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-053-OC
Nice case :)
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-196-CM
A blu-ray drive and some thermal compound and cleaner.
(just added all the costs up and I could have saved myself about £200 buying it all now :( the SSD alone was about £180 when I got it now its around £80)
In terms of easier and cheaper how much experience building and troubleshooting PC's do you have? While it is not that difficult to resolve these issues it can be incredibly frustrating... especially when you can buy pre-built gaming machines these days. There are pro's and con's to both. For instance if you buy a pre-built PC and anything is wrong on arrival its down to the company you bought it from to fix it, where as if you buy parts its down to you to prove you DIDN'T break them during the building of the machine (I have just spent 3 months testing some parts on my pc to prove it wasn't me and there genuinely is an issue). In terms of pre-builts you can get something like
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-210-OK
or
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-237-OK&groupid=43&catid=2040&subcat=1444
With the GTX570 card will easily run the games you want (comes in at a total of £739 AMD and £689 Intel) But I would advise steering clear of the AMD Bulldozer CPU's (I know I just linked one but still) as they are not as powerful and use more power than the Intel equivalent.
In all honesty it all depends on your budget....

I'm not sure that building your own will save any money up front. Decent parts aren't particularly cheap. But, a lot of the off the shelf machines (particularly Dell) use non-standard parts which make repairing and upgrading a nightmare.
So my recommendation would be to build your own.

I've always built my own and have had some belting machines.
But with companies like overclockers offering prebuilt system you can just buy a package rather than mess about. Last time I look there gaming range started at £500~ with the good'uns starting at £700
Good builds and will do all you want and more.
For good fps get 2 decent cards rather than 1 amazing one works miles better.
woogie you on dayZ ?
Yeah... We have out own DayZ server but not sure what is going on with it atm.....
Used to work for a games company and it put me right off PC gaming. You have to spend so much to get a decent rig to play the latest games and one day a game just won't work and no matter what you try it never will. Stick to the x-box and spend your money on other things. PS look in the manual for LOTRO. My name in the credits :D

As well as Overclockers, check out www,yoyotech.co.uk
I would avoid Novatech. The pics they show in the ads don't represent the product sent if it's a Novatech part. I ordered an Ati 5770 a while back with the ATI double cooler and dual monitor outputs and I got some manky HIS card with a crappy cooler. Also get a decent CPU heatsink like Arctic cooling.

Wow, I forgot to check this post I look on it and my heads bombarded.
Anyway, thanks guys. I shall start pricing up the bits and bobs and build my own. At least then it'll give me a little project. I don't want anything to extravagant, just something that's do-able for now until I get a bit more money. Most games now require round about 4-5GB RAM and recommend Nvidia graphics card, which probably I'll get anyway.
On a positive note - STEAM HAVE A FECKING SUMMER SALE AND I CAN NOT STOP WANTING.

Im selling my CPU, RAM and Mobo soon. be good to get you started all you would need is a GFX Card , HDD , PSU and a case.
It plays any game I throw it it with my ATI 9650 GFX card.
I'm due an update so genuine reason for sale :)
Let me know if your interested.
The Steam Summer Sale has ended now sadly. But you can pick up a decent enough PC for £500 - £600 that can quite easily play games at 1080p, although some settings will have to be lowered.
The cheaper option would be to buy the parts and build yourself however if your keen on building it yourself there are places out there that will build it for you.
DinoPC is one that I used, they were pretty cheap compared to everyone else and they built your PC for you with the parts that you select. They do charge about £25 delivery and it can take up to 2 weeks to get delivered. (Most of that time is sent building and testing your PC)

would you mind posting up a link for a intel system for the same price. My main use would as mentioned for gaming mainly so a graphic card that will hold up on the high settings on most games is important.
Isnt really one around that price with a similar graphics card, will need to add another £100-200 for a decent GFX card.

you can get very good bundle deals. most people build their computer. feels like it should be cheaper but not always the case.spec up and pc. find the price, and compare it to a similar bundle.
xbox i think is better for gaming. 20 seconds to start the game. 4 seconds to turn off. computer tend to be a headache

I'll never sell my xbox's because they are good for gaming especially when I'm in the mood to play something like Battlefield or Cod... I see PC gaming for more like Diablo, Skyrim etc.

Yeah, depreciation is a big deal with PC's - that's the problem. But it's nice to have a change for your mood like if one day I came home from work and though.. hmm I fancy going on Gamecube or xbox tonight it's there ready to play lol.
My laptop can just about play Lord of the rings online -.-
I need to sell my old xbox. I've had it 4 years and it never broke once (arcade version) but it's next to my new shiny black one collecting dust

You for real lol FPS games like COD and battlefield originate from PC FPS games.
BF3 is shocking on consoles compared to PC and for COD i was playing COD1 and two on PC before most kids these days were even in nappies.

I didn't say that they didn't originate lol, I'm just saying I feel more comfortable holding a controller playing the likes of 1st persons rather than with a mouse and keyboard ... people obviously have different opinions :D
The one game though that I did love on PC is Thief... and I'm still waiting for the 4th one to be fecking released since most of the designers backed-out in the middle of the production *sigh*

That was pre/early internet to so drivers were none existent. Well done, system builder nowadays don't know they are born, etc etc.

thats my set up. only spent £500 on the pc which was my budget
quad core AMD
8 gig ram
1 gig GPU radeon 5770 (used to use crossfire but seems pointless so selling the second graphics card which is on the desk)
motherboard
4 hard drives (500gig each)
crossfire capable power supply 850watt (bit pointless now i dont need it)
was given an old ancient pc case which does the job and saved money. by time made pc looked around and for similar PC would have had a similar spec but as a bundle was about the same. but then again theres an xbox on my desk which can be used between loading screens.
better off working towards a budget and getting what you want. i wanted average motherboard, modern quad core CPU, average/modern graphics card, alot of ram. but for a good price. I will never use 8 gigs of ram, or max out the CPU. so whats the point of having better?
wont max out the two 10" subs under the desk or the 6 5-1/4 inch cast basket drivers and 6 5-1/4 inch pressure-coupled Low Bass radiators for impressive deep bass with high impact punch which are built into the wall, either... but they cost £475 off ebay and that was in my budget =D.

Which is why I boot from a 60GB SSD and load apps/games from a 1TB RAID0 array.
Will be adding a 240GB SSD for my game installs just as soon as I can afford one.
Bulk storage is dealt with by the Linux Fileserver with 3.7TB of Raid5 on board.

This. I was always interested by them, got my first one in 2006 and haven't looked back. It was already used (a year old) but lasted until just a few months ago. My current MacBook is two years old and still going fine with absolutely no problems. I can't say that for any other PC laptop I've used or had to troubleshoot.

Absolute fortune in monitors there...... Jesus..
£400 each for the 20" ones and £600 for the 24" (was a refurb).
I had just been paid out £25k as a redundancy settlement :)
Good investment tho, 6 years on they are still going strong.
Long term plan is to replace all 3 with a 120degree triple projector Circular projection rig, but waiting for proces to drop - which based on a 1m radius for the screen, would give a 5760x1080 resolution monitor that is 93cm tall and 210 cm wide, each projector covering a 40 degree arc, 70cm across.
Problem is the software to pre-distort the image, and the cost of REAL 1080p LED projectors.
In the shorter term I am seriously considering one of the 27" 2560x1440 IPS monitors that are appearing from Korea, which use "A Grade" LG panels, so ones that didn't make the grade for being sold to the likes of Apple :p
Yeah Dell monitors are ace, As I said I've had mine around 6 years now (maybe longer actually) and its still going strong with no issues what so ever.
Right then.
Who is up for playing some games tonight?
I say this because I am going to be on tonight for a for a few hours from probably around 7 or 8? Likely be on BF3. But I have most of the good games out there.
Ill check back after work see who's game. It'd be interesting to see some of you guys on there!
Oh and btw, in response to the original point, definitely go for buy your own bits. Its not that hard to do and there is plenty of help an assistance out there and im sure we can help too!
Im currently rocking a core i5 2310 and two ati hd6870s in my rig. Starting to regret the dual graphics cards due to the mini heatwave we have had down here the past few days!

Im going on BF gonna try to catch up to you Tom and add you now.
Im Elltg or Elltguk im not sure which one is my soldier and what one is my profile.
Also im on steam as EllTheGamer or Ellthegamer.
We should start a steam group for the org! Although i bet there probably is one somewhere. Thoughts anyone?
Cant find you tom, and now i have realised why. You are going on the xbox. Unfortunate.
Anyone else about?
The is indeed an SV650.ORG Steam group. However it is by invite only.
<Begging dog eyes> Invite please? :)
I have near 200 hours of bf3 and the same for bf2142 and a buttload of tf2 back in the day. Dont even get me started on halo!
Last night i was on BF3 on noshaar canals and i got K42-D17 :)
Got over 14 days (342 hours) on 2142, 8 or so on COD4 and a good 140 hours on Day of Defeat.
Rey, 2142! good man!
My achievment was that a month in i was ranked 640th with the knife for kills out of the hundreds of thousands of players, and that was a mans knife not like the easy ones of these days!
Heres hoping for BF2143!
Hey, i just posted.
And this is crazy!
But heres my steam tag (ellthegamer).
So add me maybe?

I remember getting the Philippines and Battle Of Britain maps FREE in BF1942. Now they'd probably charge £5 each for them.
