View Full Version : Damage to bike by bin men.
I knew there was a reason I bought lens covers for my sv650s. Biffa bin men decided to run a big red metal bin into it and cracked the lens cover if they had hit the actual headlight then that would be a small fortune to replace. hopefully I have them on camera as well as the paint marks so that I can do something about it.

Speak to the local biffa office and make a formal claim against them. If you get no where, use the "I'm getting my insurance involved" and see what happens (then do it if needs be).
Biffa will be paying out all the time as some of the drivers shouldn't have licences.
There is the address and contact number for them

Good luck. I tried doing this to a skip company that used my dad's car as a bump-stop when it dropped a skip into the next parking space. They said "do one" and dad bottled out of the insurance route so the b*stards got away with it.
You could always bring a claim on

Cheap, pretty guaranteed to win and don't need to involve solicitors (but they will) so they should just settle

it will be a lot cheaper for them to just pay for the damage
So rang the office they said i need to speak to there insurance but they dont work weekends and work 9-5 weekdays not great when I havent got time during the day looks like its a call from work on Monday to try and get this sorted. Seams the have also damaged the front mud guard too but will be a lot cheaper for them to settle then going the insurance route but if needs must I will get my insurers involved.
Did you get them on camera? It was a possibility in your OP.
In the absence of any witnesses or CCTV footage, there's a good chance you'll get the cold shoulder from their insurer. Your own insurer might not be any luckier so that would be a reduction in your No Claims Bonus if you go that route.
Get your evidence together before you do anything else.
I have an idea what might happen here. I might be wrong but I would recommend that you expect no help whatsoever from Biffa's insurers.

If the damage took place at work, is it worth speaking to your facilities management?

When's bin day?
Go & kick their smelly truck over.
You may not get cash, but think of the satisfaction!
Just an update on this currently this is getting sorted out through there accident management company on them they have even give me a hire bike until my bike is checked by an independent inspector so they can send me the money for the damages.
So im currently riding around on a 08 plate suzuki 650 bandit and finally understand why people choose the naked bikes.

sounds like they're actually being very decent about it, kudos to them if they carry on in this vein
So they have offered me £1200 for fixing my bike and they say it isnt a write off. So now what do I do?
Should I fix the bike or use it as a deposit for a different bike? If I was to fix it I think first on my list would be gixxer front end if the suspension is truly knackered no way for them or me to tell without sending it to a specialist but said it seems fine.
Or Attempt to px the bike see what they offer and put some of the the money towards a deposit on a newer bike?

What did the damage report say?
£1200 seems to be a lot of money...
£1,200! From your first post it appears that the damage is a cracked headlight cover?!
I dont know think i may need to ask for the report but I think its due to my dad saying that when it was knocked it fell over while it was locked up so possibly some of it is for damage down one side of the bike. So not sure as I was not there when it was inspected or knocked into. I will give them a ring monday to see if i can get a copy of the report or at leased the jist of it.
Basically they are paying that due to them not wanting to bother to take it to a proper suspension tester basically they just want it solved as soon as possible. I agree £1200 seems over the top but depends if it turns out the suspension is totally knackered along with the wheels and discs but from what i can see they look ok. Cant see that they are bent or missaligned.
Take the money! New front end must be less than that? Or did they damage fairing etc aswell?
Blimey O Reilly! I thought they'd just damaged a headlight cover.
Did the bike actually go down?

The forks will be fine even if the bike fell over.
Looks like someone has made a big error offering you that payout!
Maxton front end would e better than gsxr btw
I dont know if it fell over as I wasnt there but thats what there offering after the independant inspector took a look even though he thinks the suspension is ok. Seems a good payout to me for it so im not going to argue now just to wait for the cheque.
Then make a decision if its time to trade in and up to a bike with some more power or upgrade the bike I already own. Leaning towards a newer different bike as ive had this one since it rolled out of the factory.
Also I will keep the maxton front end in mind if I decide to keep the bike.
That's a good result for sure. Did you have CCTV or a witness or something?
Nope the Biffa men told the people that they collect the bins for that they had knocked into the bike with a big metal bin and reported it to there office as well and when I rang them about it they passed me to there insurers who then passed me to there accident management team who then arranged everything.

Kinda makes you want to belive in mankind again. Well done bin men!
Oh, £1200, buy another SV, one for road and one for track :D
Lol. I hadn't considered honesty as a possibility TBH. I'm obviously getting too cynical. :)

£1200 sounds like a lottery win. If there are no signs of physical damage anywhere on the bike other than the headlight cover, then it is highly likely that there is no internal damage done anywhere. This means you have just been offered £1200 to get a new headlight cover. Take it and run!!! :D
Regards
Have done so and the cheque is in the bank so all is good just need to arrange them picking the hire bike back up. And finally decide what to do with the money.

Great outcome. Just remember to park it near a wheelie bin when you next feel like a change :p
