Hi all, I'm new here. Firstly great site, enjoyed reading through the threads and seen lots of good advice and help.
Ok, now to the point, I purchased my first SV650 Naked (2000) a few days ago and very happy with it but I noticed this rattling sound that comes and goes that appears to be coming from the front cylinder, could any one here put my fears to rest and tell me it isn't serious? It sounds like someone shaking a can of spray paint but I recorded it to best demonstrate how it sounds.

I find it really hard to tell engine rattles on youtube, where are you located maybe someone could have a listen in person.

Hi, yeah I know what you mean, they don't translate well when recorded.
I'm in Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield to be precise.

That rattle is definitely there, but it's hard to tell whether it's as loud as the normal rattle or louder.
Try rev it, if you get a lot more clacks/rattles as the revs drop down then that's a strong sign something is amiss.

Revving doesn't appear to make it any worse at all either at high revs or dropping back down to idle, it just drowns out the rattling that you can hear in that video.

Sounds like a lose bolt to me but as yc said its hard to tell on pootube , how many miles on the bike ? Valve clearances been done ect ? Maybe worth checking the cam chain tensioner
If you want you could bring the bike to mine and I'll have a listen in person I'm in rugby so no a million miles away , I'm in every day after 6.30pm

Afraid I'm a total mechanical noob so checking CCT is outside my expertise. As far as I know valve clearance hasn't been done.
It's done 11,000 miles. First owner only did 2,000 miles in 8 years (a bit low!), previous owner did 9,000 in 3 years. It's got full service history, nothing in the records to indicate any previous problems.
Thanks for the offer of having a look, not in a position to get there this week though due to work. :(

Maybe I'm just paranoid. Forgot to mention, took it to my local mechanic yesterday and the guy said he couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary at the time but there clearly is an intermittent noise there, that's why I posted on here even though he said it was ok, maybe he just couldn't hear it.
He even hopped on it and went round the block a few miles and said it sounded ok to him. All he mentioned was that the SV is prone to CCT failure and to keep an eye on it. Surely at only 11k it shouldn't be a CCT problem though?
It does sound like a chainy kind of rattle doesn't it? I'm no expert on SV motors but I do seem to pick up on noises quite easily and there is defo a noise there.

Yeah, it's kind of like what barwel mentioned, like a small bolt or something is being randomly juggled around. I'm puzzled.

Well the sleeve in the CCT that rattles (normal) seems to drift in and out of resonating. Just it's hard to pin down on a recording.

Alright dude,
Got to the bottom of this yet? I'm chasing a similar rattle on my '01 sv650s at the moment so I'd be interested to hear how you've got on?
BTW I'll be looking at the front CCT sometime this week (once I've got past 3/4 of a tank full!).

Well, it did appear to be the cam chain tensioner, replaced it and the noise has gone. It looked like it had got 'stuck' and was rattling back and forth, which was causing the noise.
