View Full Version : (Allegedly) I'm a male chauvinist pig!
She might be right...
I was watching the women's 100m qualifiers yesterday and, foolishly, said I thought the idea was to watch the fastest runners. I tried to tell her that I couldn't give a to$$ if its a man or a woman but I want to watch the fastest. Too late, she'd gone in hyper-drive and full rant mode.
Ah bliss! She's not talking to me now.

Actually you, like me, are fighting for equality.
Having separate mens and women's events is divisive and wrong. Women should be paid the same and compete the same with and against the men.
Giving them separate events merely reinforces the unfair and outdated stereotype that they are inferior.

Hmmm, in that case, at Olympic level, there would be very few, if any, women at all.
Our bodies, apart from the obvious, are completely different, different body fat ratios, bone density etc and at those levels, it makes a difference.
Mind you, them women running the 100m were pretty fecking quick all the same! And the discus flingers were men with hair...

So?
I don't see that as a problem unless the women are being excluded even though they're good enough.
Our bodies, apart from the obvious, are completely different, different body fat ratios, bone density etc and at those levels, it makes a difference.
And we keep being told women are cleverer than men and that they do better at exams, do we have a men's and women's A level?
Besides that there's more events than just running, why do they have a women's and mens archery?
So what you're trying to say is that men are better at sports? ;)
Sounds a bit sexist to me.

Lol are you real?
Men and women are not equal at all that's why people are classed as men or women.
In reality a man will win 90% of events which means hardly any women in the games at all, I was watching the women's weight lifting the other day bearing in mind they are at an Olympic level I could do the weights they were doing without even breaking a sweat. Maybe we should enter horses into the 100 meter sprint after all they are mammals to......
This is not sexist in anyway, it's merely fact!

Yes I'm real. I'm also for real.
Would you think it right if I suggested a womans place was in the home?
Or that a woman should get less pay for doing the same job as a male if it's physical work since they aren't as strong?
I don't believe horses are humans and I don't know what mammals have to do with it but I think bats would break the long jump records.

That's another argument all together, the fact is that men and women are built very different, men are designed to be stronger than women fact.
Women sports people deserve the same respect as men but they can not compete against each other, that just stupid.
Unfortunately this world isn't equal.
I would be interested to see you reaction to an Olympic games in which men and women competed together "this isn't fair, there's 1000 men but only 3 women"

In physical sports no, but in the example that was given - archery. Why not? unless your arguement is that women - or men for that matter - are less accurate and so its 'just stupid'?

Not to stray off topic but find some of the posts quite interesting. Anyway, I believe makes some very good points ;)
grimey121uk , do you think there are any logical reasons(part from sexism) for women tennis players being payed the same as men for doing less...eg at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship?

Why isn't there a men's sychronised swimming event?
Equestrian is the only event where men and women compete together.

No, it's the same argument, either we offer equal opportunities or we don't. If we dont then theres no point doing it in anything, you can chop the human race up a myriad of different ways and find races and genders that are naturally different or worse at different things, we dont then have specific categories for them. In all other walks of life we hold men and women to the same standards reardless of any supposed innate ability differences, yet suddenly in sport we don't. Maybe women should have a different driving test because their visio-spatial ability has been proved to be (on average) worse than mens?

Sexist. Equal work for equal pay.

no, that is precicely fair.
If they cannot compete at that level on an individual basis then they shouldn't be there. I'm not there, I'll never be there, I'm not good enough and that's fair too.
Why isn't there a men's sychronised swimming event?
Why is it gender based at all?

Men and women are different and neither genders want to be treated equally 100% of the time.
Men are on the receiving end of sexism much more than women IMO.
Cheaper car insurance???
In employment, women get treated better mostly.
In a physically demanding job, allowances are made for their inferior strength, men don't get that luxury.
Government guildlines suggest a certain percentage of top jobs should be held by women (and ethnic minorities, but that's another story) why? Shouldn't it be the best person for the job regardless of gender, race and sexual orientation?
I'm sure there's more examples I could think of as I've had this discussion many times but I'm flu'ed up and can't think straight :(

Does mixed doubles in tennis count?
I don't think it's an altogether stupid idea that men and women could compete against each other but it would hugely depend on the sport. As mentioned, weightlifting would be a breeze for men, as would any sport involving strength. Women just aren't built the same and it would only be with masses of steroids that they could consider themselves bulky enough. At the end of the day women were designed for childbearing, you can't argue with that. If the women came from long family lines of fine athleticism then perhaps it could be perceived they could be genetically better placed for competing but as far as I'm aware, most competitors are just dedicated individuals who commit their entire lives to the cause.
I've loved watching the women compete in this year's Olympics, the women's football was far more enjoyable compared to men's, more technical and just better all round.
And I think you might have just caught your missus at a bad moment Bri :p

Btw, I didn't mean I'm not in complete awe at the women (and men) who have done us so proud in the Olympics, some of the other countries' women have looked physically bigger and stronger and they have still triumphed :)
Jess Ennis on Saturday in the 800m on the last stretch, the eventual bronze winner running along side her was over a foot taller and built like a brick WC, she still dominated =D>:notworthy:
