Becoming very popular, personally I dont want (or need) one of these. But having seen a few now they are clearly becoming more popular. I think they are a good idea, probably fun too. Some of them look smart too. Mind you, a half decent used pointy for the same money would be my preference.

I built my own from a kit and a great old man bike.

It's awesome.

Now, that looks ok. Well done.

Now....How fast does it go?

15mph on the motor alone, but pedal with it and you can easily be doing 20mph everywhere. It's amazing for overtaking roadies up hills, and its stealth so they just think you are some kind of pedal legend. FLying past them up hill in a suit.

They have become quite popular down my way over the last couple of years particularly in the Asian communities. The first time I saw one it was something of a surprise to see a slight Asian super woman pedalling easy at 20mph plus. It took a moment to realise she had an electric assist.

I reckon that these would be great for inner city living or working where parking is at a premium or saving the (horrible) wear and tear on a motorcycle from those short 2-5mi commutes.

Under no circumstances should you go to this site though if you are interested in e-bikes!! You will be creating a 40 mph beast within minutes.

This thread made me think, I love my commute but would prefer it slightly shorter especially on the way home. I took the plunge and bought one of these http://www.aliexpress.com/item/high-power-26-250w-36v-ebike-conversion-kits-36v-9ah-waterbottle-battery-led-display-electric-bike/533528622.html to see what difference it would make. It arrived after about two weeks.

I took it out for the first time today, on the way in it knocked about 5 minutes off the usual 40, on the way home 10 minutes off the usual 45, as the route home is more uphill. It helped maintain speed uphill also a big bonus is pulling away, it's so quick and effortless up to 15mph awesome in traffic. Brilliant thing is I was working just as hard as normal just traveling faster8-)

So, that's two orgers with electric bicycles. I wonder how many others there are....
Interesting machines though, no tax, no mot, no licence or insurance. So for a short commute these are actually worth considering.

Happy biking !

During the summer, I was in Toronto.
I saw dozens of electric scooters.
from the n/s they look just like petrol scooters, the give away is the no exhaust on o/s.
They are certainly nippy.
The only issue I saw (heard??) was that they were silent, with a bicycle you either hear bike rattling or cyclist huffing and puffing. With these - nothing.

I spoke to a few owners, in Toronto they are treated as bicycles - no tax/insurance required for road.

Thet must had had a decent range as they were popular.

With folk spending a grand on a lightweight bike so they can look a spazz peddling to work dressed in camp lycra then stinking all day this should be a more appealing option

Perhaps I can buy one for my wife, so she can cycle to work and town.

That'll mean saving more money for me to spend on camp lycra and lightweight stuff for my bike ;)

I raised a question about KTM bicycles in another thread, then whilst looking came across this http://www.ktm4u.co.uk/ktm-cycles/ktm-electric-cycles

Some interesting electric models here, and it appears that a lot of the big manufacturers are also offering these ebikes too. Scott, Giant, Cube.... Must be something we dont know? I fancy trying one out though, looks preet fun to pop a wheelie on haha.
