View Full Version : Oil Leak Advice Please!

Found a few small patches of oil on the floor. This is for my GSXR. Took the side fairing off and had a ganders. First thing to mention is above the photo the crank case(? thank that's right!) shows signs of the bike being low sided at some point as is ground away a bit.
The oil leak appears to be coming from the seal between the black crankcase(?) and the block. Look above the big bolt. It's pretty minor. Not much on the garage floor, and I did about 100 miles last ride and oil level hasn't noticeably changed.
So what should I do? Forget about it for now and keep an eye on it? The bike is a 2001 27k miles, £1700 far from mint, so doesn't warrant masses spent on it. Or get it fixed? If so, any ideas how big a job or how difficult for a intermediate (at best) hobby mechanic?

Excellent use of the "..." there Paul. Let's call it the rollercoaster dots. It results in a moment of fear, followed by relief and desire to punch you in the face.
You might want to see about getting that finger removed. I'm sure it's not helping.
I'm sure someone useful will be along shortly ....

I'm here and very useful.
Put some bluetac where it seems to be leaking, job jobbed.

Wanna borrow my tight white jeans for when you work on that oil leak since I already got them covered in grease getting Chris Numbers a beer out of the garage fridge on Saturday night - then return them to me sparkly white again?
Oh and that's not his finger, it's his oddly shaped chipolata willy. It's what he always uses to fix his bike.

I cant answer your question, but have a look at www.gixerjunkies.com and see if theres anything on there specific to your model GSXR.
It's always hard to tell from these pics but it does look like that cover could be the culprit. Am I also seeing the tell-tale signs of gasket sealant oozing out the joint? Which side of the bike is it out of interest?
Oil leaks can be a ******* though - I spent weeks chasing one on the RGV. It's not always clear cut where it's coming from. I'd clean and dry that area and then dust it with talc. You should then be able to tell if that's where the leak is coming from - best to know for sure before you start buying gaskets etc.
Apologies for the serious answer - I've probably killed this thread.

He's got plenty of talc, it helps him get into the gimp suit.

clearly someone before has either patched up an old gasket of just not fitted one and used "instant gasket" in it's place when fitting that cover, if the oil lost is minor then I should be fine as long as you check your oil regularly, but at some point I'd get a proper gasket or make one and get that cover off, stanley knife blade to carefully cut away all that goo, and re-fit properly.
Cheers Mark.

Ignore it and ride around with me laughing at your old leaking bike.
it's your dodgy oil and filter change abilities :-)

Actually, I didn't help it Bibio mate. Slightly overfilled. Probably put too much pressure on everything, but pretty sure it was leaking already.
@Rictus - Thanks for the advice mate. I may have a bash at the next oil change. I know spank has a proper gasket scraper he bought when he was blowing up his KTM EXC, so could borrow that and have a go refitting it.
Brake were rubbish tonight though. Think that's the priority!

I'm sure that things around somewhere, I'll have a hunt next time I'm rummaging in the garage.
it's because you have Orange wheels, the oil is trying to escape the horror of them

Shut it Job! You go mad for my orange wheels. You want them so bad.
@Ad - Cheers dude. And what about that huge ******* torque wrench? I bet you never use that. How much did it cost you, and do you want to flog it?

You can borrow it, but I do still use it occasionally (once a year) on the lawnmower.
If you put a pump in your undertray with a hose back up to the oil filler cap I think that'd solve the problem.

Or just ride upside down once in a while. Maybe on the roof of the Hindhead tunnel. Some of it will drip back in.
Arrange a cunning array of gullys and pipes and use it to lubricate you chain.

Oil leak advice please!
Easiest way is prob to just back a few engine bolts out, should leak plenty then.
Hope that helps.

You cant go slapping Yorkshire folk (unless its filmed on a mobile phone). I shall however gladly accept your provisional knight-hood and long shall I reign as "Sir Matt-compoop"

You're both right. I have some proper sick fetishes which I hide behind a playful fun loving exterior. Pity any woman, man or animal that agrees (or doesn't) to lay hither with Pervertious Maximus.
@Paul - Don't worry mate. The very statement "I'll call you back" coming from a bloke means "I'll call you back if I remember and am not sidetracked by something even vaguely important or interesting." I'm not a woman. I won't hold it against you ... well, not until you're sleeping.

The things fallout holds against people while they are sleeping don't bear thinking about.

I'd have insisted on having a lock in the outside of his door! Wouldn't want him laying in wait for me to need the bathroom... Stealth attack with the cover of darkness on his side.

Which engine cover is that? I suspect it's the ignition rotor/pickup. If yes, then the engine turning hex is under there on the ignition rotor, and as such the cover will need removing when the bike is serviced to turn the engine when setting the valve clearances, it's probably not had the gasket replaced and thus weeps a bit.
That's if it's the cover I think it is anyway.
Unless it's weeing out it's unsightly rather than problematic. The gasket is easy to replace if you're concerned about it.
