View Full Version : Saturday Looks Good

Runako
08-08-12, 07:16 PM
Ok, so heading down to Bridgend Thunder Road to test a GSXR750. Another Orger will be testing a Honda NAKED. And a virgin will also be there to pick up their first 125 scooter. So in the spirit of "cancelling whatever boring crap you're doing and get riding", I'm suggesting Saturday might be a good day for a meet up/Rideout.

The Bike Camera will be out to film the Gixxer and the NAKED. You can immortalise your demon (i.e. bike) and skills on film (so to speak) or we can just head out for a nice little ride whilst the weather is good.

As for routes, the "The Secret Road" may again feature if time allows. Otherwise, there's a load of places to head in that neck of the woods. I'll be heading down to TR for 9ish. If anyone's interested or if more organisation is needed then PM etc etc

Oh Lord ... right, Org Poll!!!

squirrel_hunter
11-08-12, 09:03 PM
Just spotted this. Couldn't have made it today as I was cutting the wrong wire on the brakes to my mates BMW, but am free for a while tomorrow if anyone else is around?

Runako
11-08-12, 09:07 PM
Haha, the "wrong wire"? I hope it didn't turn into a "Zombie Beemer" or anything (i.e. See Zombie Apocalypse poll in IB). Actually, I reckon you should make a decent route involving some of roads we did last time and see if we can plan a date where we can get a few people involved.

Saw several SV's out today, maybe they're not on here but if they are then there's more than enough for a decent rideout. As for tomoz, it might rain. But if not and others are interested, I'll be tempted. Was quite good today also.

11-08-12, 09:21 PM
Yeah I'm not sure about the weather, I've heard funny things there. If I don't I will be in the garage fitting a steering damper.

Grant66
14-08-12, 07:25 PM
The forecast is looking OK for Saturday.

Who wants to play out?

As a start I've done 3 different routes, all starting at the services near Chepstow (easy to get to from Cardiff or Bristol), 10:30?

Route 1:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b298/Gajjii/Route1.png

Route 2:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b298/Gajjii/Route2.png

Route 3:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b298/Gajjii/Route3.jpg

I'm favouring route 2. Open to suggestions for better routes (secret road).

I'm liking Cymraeg's route. Should we do that?

Was thinking about 10:30 at the Texaco garage near the M48 (chepstow) exit. Up the A466, right at roundabout. 100 yrs-ish on right.

Oh, I'm not gonna be there, I live in Gt Yarmouth, but, as I lived in that area for about 17 years thought I might suggest a better route.

If you do go, have fun, ride safe and don't fill up in that Texaco, one of the most expensive pretrol stations in the area!

ME ME ME ME, i'm in.

Is 10:30am confirmed, can i get a knock on my door to wake me up Grant XD

P.S Can i call back marker, exhuast tends to be screamy and a lil petrolly in peoples faces, normally don't mind but not amongst friends.

pps. A friend of mine has said that a much better route would involved the B4235

squirrel_hunter
17-08-12, 05:06 PM
Yep I should be able to make that...

Grant66

OK route updated to include B4235

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=201464957052290864182.0004c778e64ceb89ae43f

Please let me know if it doesn't work.

I'll give you a knock at 10? or earlier.

Not had a response from the welsh element yet

Edit: 10:30 seems to be a consensus :)

Cymraeg_Atodeg

I'd advice caution on taking the B4235, is a very nice road, but, loads of farms around there and blind corners with mad locals.

Also, very narrow in places. So, if you are gonna do the road do it sensibly as it in dangerous without being a nutter on it as well.

Hey, Stu, you don't have any friends!

Oh and seeing as I'm up and can't sleep, has anyone (who is coming along tomorrow) got the tool to remove the OEM oil filter? Cheers fellas.

squirrel_hunter
18-08-12, 12:44 AM
You don't need 'the' tool exactly. There are a number of tools that you can use and a number of ways to do it. You can even do it by hand depending on how tight its become. Car types I have found are too big, a strap or chain type usually works best. Failing that the screw driver method can be of use. Remind me tomorrow and I'll explain better.

Which road didn't you like?

I think it was the B4233. Didn't help it was wet and I had a square front tyre, but there was so much gravel and mud on there it was like riding off road at some points. You ought to have seen TON's face when he looked at his bike covered in mud at Aber...

Grant66
18-08-12, 07:04 PM
Tired too. bike now in bits. I seem to have located the problem, but for the life of me I can't understand how it worked earlier (I'll start a thread in "tweaking").

Nice to meet some new people & looking forward to doing it again. Not next Saturday though, Carfest apparently, the weekend after I've got kids to look after :( After that is good though :p

Agree about the B4233, not going down there again. Shame you didn't manage to bag that squirrel :)

Great ride chaps! Genuinely meant because its great to get out & its always tricky to get the right circumstances and the right company to have an enjoyable ride. Stu, nice to meet you & very nice bike. Sorry to hear about the bike Grant and interested to see what was causing the problem. VB get on here and start planning some routes with more of those cracking mountain roads. That mountain top vista was quite a picture.

Definitely up for more of that chaps. If ever I have a free Saturday or Sunday I'm there so just let me know. Will try and get some vids up but no promises (as editing is bloody boring!!!!!). Have a great Sunday y'all.

Oh, one more thing. Would love to go on a ride with sane people who don't believe in Zombies. If anyone's out there .... ;)

The road in question is off the B4520. From Brecon you go towards Upper / Lower Chappel, just after Upper Chappel you have a turn off.. this is the B4519 and is the road through the Epynt firing range... if the red flags are up, DO NOT GO OFF THE MAIN ROAD if the signs have a warning notice next to them... bad things will happen! ;)
On this roads, most of the buildings you pass have been converted in to bunk houses for the MOD... may look like a pub / house on the outside but you will se a sign on a few of them saying it's MOD property...

Spotted the fake German Village on google earth too... sadly all the roads next to it are out of bounds, but you can get nearish enough to see it, just not allowed in it...

Runako

Awesome lets do that again!

Lol, its more likely I'll die of boredom trying to edit down these vids!

Reviewed all the footage yesterday & managed to edit to 20mins of highlights. You wouldn't believe how bad the weather/roads/traffic looks on Camera. Funny how the mind plays tricks. I think listening to music definitely keeps the boredom away.

Anyway, got to the last vid - as I editing them all in one go - and the software crashed! I was livid grrrrrrr. It had gone midnight and no matter what I tried I couldn't unfreeze it. So back to the raw footage and will have to leave it for a couple of days :( Will post here as soon as fininshed.

Keep a hold of it for the moment. I have one on my coffee table. I also have one on the engine bench. I think at least one of these should work, but can't remember which bikes they came from. The one on the bench might be the suspect one, or that might be the one on the bike, or that may be a new broken one. I can't remember which one is the suspect one that kept blowing the main fuse, but I would have thought I would have chucked it. Unless I suspected something else and kept it on the side but forgot to throw it. But I do remember throwing the relay at a similar time. However that one on the side could be from SH1 but I thought I already have used that one and that one broke or was never right. But the one on the bench is on some packaging, and if I was sent it I would have used it. It doesn't make sense that I have unwrapped but not used it, unless I used it and put the old suspect one down on top of it to keep it safe. Why I would do that with a suspected broken one I don't know. Its a rich tapestry that I weave.

However, your Mum is visiting you say...

Runako
02-09-12, 10:35 PM
Never used Sony Vegas before. Let me know what its like when you get to grips with it. The worst thing about using Windows Movie Maker is it simply cant handle all of what you want it to do. It has all the tools (cutting, add music, add text, transition, etc etc) but when you put everything together it just crashes. So I took extra care to back up everything this time.

Its not the best vid and I wanted to make a few changes, maybe get the clips in sync to the music but after 5hrs I felt I was pushing my luck with this program and just decided to get it out. I might actually spend some money to get a decent editor if I ever decide to take this video thing more seriously )or maybe just turn my Mac on every once in a while).

Autosol, WD40, elbow grease. Autosol is a metal polish so is good for the tough bits, but most can be taken off with WD40 anyway. But if using Autosol make sure its all cleaned off with the WD40 as it is abrasive.

Top tip for refitting: wipe the inside of the yoke clamps with WD40. Not only does this clean out the surface rust that is on there but helps the stanchion slip back in easier.

20w will make a difference. I think its 10w standard with 15w being the traditional recommendation. Not sure how 20w will change the ride quality, it should be a lot stiffer but not sure if thats to much, out side of my knowledge. You running standard springs?
