View Full Version : Sealing a leaking fuel tank?

I've recently noticed a very slight fuel leak coming from the side of the tank on my 1999 SV650s. After close inspection it seems like there is a tiny crack on the lower side part of the fuel tank seam. I'm looking for a replacement tank, but would like to try and seal it first. Has anyone tried this and if so what did you use and did you have any luck? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Will.

Araldite and a suitable little patch for strength.

As Sid squid.

I would also POR15 seal the tank as a belts and braces method, or try someone like this

These guys can refurb a tank internally and remove all the inner rust. Highly recommended.

This is quite good as its a full cleanup and sealing kit, well rated and i have used it in the past

Doesn't fix a crack but it's a cool idea to get rid of rust :D

Thanks for all the reply's. I'm liking the look of that sealer kit, going to order it up and crack on with the repair once the good weathers out the way.

Interesting. How has it held up to now? And did you find it to be a messy job?

The tank on our old GTR had a pin hole due to rust, we rubbed it back and found a hole the size of a pea. Halfrauds sell a specialist fuel tank epoxy that is petrol safe and also easy to sand and shape after. We used that and the repair looks and feels perfect, you would never know that there was any damage there once it is painted.

The tube and hardener comes in a set and cost less than a fiver.

I may take a trip down to Halfords then and see if they do this. Would be a cheaper fix if it worked. I'm trying to get away with not having to respray the tank, but this may not be possible with this stuff?

Failing that I think I'll order up a POR15 kit and smash it out next weekend.
