View Full Version : Buying advice - mileage high?

Spyder

So I've got my 2nd attempt at mod 2 in just over a week (fingers crossed), but have got the chance of a fully faired 04 plate with nearly 25k miles on the clock.
Looks in great condition, but any thoughts on the mileage?
Just wondered if it was a bit high?
As a complete newbie I've no idea :-D
Thx

My k4 has done about 24k now and is still going strong. See what the service history is like. Mine had a full dealer service history but I still checked it over when I got it and gave it a full service. One guy on here (name surpassed me) sold his pointy with over 116000 miles on it!!

HTH

So was mine, Guy just took it to the dealer when it needed it and told them to get on with it.

All my bikes have had around that milage. Even one that has been serviced by a hampster (like my current bike) should still have some good life left in it, especially for the work horse SV engine. :)

Great.... So if engines ok, anything else I should ask about for a bike of that mileage?
Tyres, discs, pads etc are all fine
I don't have a licence so can't test ride yet...

ALWAYS take someone with you who is more experienced or at least more objective. ALWAYS do this. Even if that someone is just to bounce your thoughts off. Unless you're me. Then you can ignore your own advice.

Yeah I 's'pose I should have taken someone... None of my mates are bikers though (or know anything about them) 😊

any bike can be made to look good with a few hours work. better taking someone who knows bikes.

how many owners has it had?
is the bike local?
service history?
keys 2 of?
documentation including owners manual and service book?

there are a few ecosse members who might lend a hand so go ask in the ecosse section for help.

Check the chain and sprockets for excessive wear. They wore out at about this time (25k) on my old curvy.

No probs with that mileage but check the bike for what it is just like any other. Then price it accordingly and dont pay too much

Providing the bike's been serviced regularly and kept clean 25K is not at all excessive for a pointy SV (and indeed many bike's made in the last decade). A well looked after SV is quite capable of taking double that in its stride.

So the key is to make sure it's been well looked after and, as other orgers have said, that applies to buying any used bike, whatever the mileage.

Better by far to walk away from a bum deal than pick up a bargain. I think Abraham Lincoln said that :-)

Just bought my 1999 Curvy with 29,000 miles on the clock and it is fine. Engine tight and smoke free.

I got mine on 14000 miles and wish I'd have had someone who knew about bikes to go with me. Bike had to go back to the dealer twice (as per my thread on this) for minor things but just wish I'd have had someone there with me to give me a second opinion besides my girlfriend who just shrugged.

What denotes a high milage bike? My K9 had 16,000 when I picked it up 11 months ago. Now has just over 18k on the clock. Few minor scratches all for less than £2,500!!!

Is 35,000 on a ten year old bike too high? Is there really an average mileage bike. Some have lower some higher. Aslong as it has a good history loads of MOT's then you know its been looked after.

They will do 100,000 miles plus given regular oil changes and a bit of mechanical sympathy.

i here so many different stories on here about engine troubles/rebuilds,and have no idea how long a well used/abused sv will last, but most modern bikes with a few notible exceptions are quite capable of high milage with regular oil changes, just for instance most air oil cooled bandit engines are good for in excess of 100k and the older vfr 800 engine is good for 250k,my vfr has 35k on the clock and i would say it is a low milage bike, and my winter hack bandit 6 has 56k on the clocks and the engine is as good as it was when it came out of the crate when it was new, mind you the rest of the bike is decidedly second hand, but thats a different storie and more to do with english winter and suzuki's crap finish
