Actually I enjoy wearing formal wear. If the mem sahib has made the effort, why should I not compliment her. I own a monkey suit and 3 dress shirts, red, black and purple bow ties, red and black cumberbunds etc.

My problem is:- I also own a silk cream dinner jacket I had made a long time ago when I worked in the far east and was the appropriate wear for formal nights out there. My question, when it is appropriate to wear this for European formal evenings. My own choice is if the temperature is over 25 degrees then it is warm enough to wear a lighter weight/colour and still comply with the formal requirement.

Is there any understood protocol?

If you're in England I believe the only acceptable occasion is halloween.

Lol... Up north the appropriate occasion would be anytime you felt like getting a sound beating ;-)
