View Full Version : Closing ceremony

Anyone else completely underwhelmed so far? Sound quality terrible, poor choice of music - the first song might have been by a popular artist but it wasn't upbeat at all.
Complete contrast to the opening ceremony and the Olympics as a whole. David Arnold has completely missed the point.

I take it back. They've just wheeled out that hag Annie Lennox. She gets on every big event. wtf do people like about her???. I flaming can't stand her. Throw her in the North Sea!!!!!!!!!!

Amadeus

It had got better but Lennox - ffs.
I hope I'm wrong but I understand pretty vacant is being performed later. By French and Saunders. Really.

I'm currently writing a letter to my MP.

Olympics have been surprisingly interesting for me, the opening and closing ceremonies havent, they have been too fecking long, too fecking boring and too fecking expensive, all the ponsy extravagance isnt what the olympics should be about, its has no part in it imo.

It was reported the opening ceremony cost £25m if i heard right this morning, if this is true that is stupid money, tacky spending that much in this climate, its a bit like 'we are considerably richer than yow' type thing to try and impress the rest of the world.

Why the feck does it have to go on so long, the athletes have to stand there for bloody ages, bet they cant wait for it to be over.

Amadeus
12-08-12, 10:30 PM
I do see your point SP1 about the spending but if we want to get ourselves out of this financial crisis, we need to show the world that we're good - punch bigger than our weight, so I see such spending as an investment.
I thought the opening ceremony was excellent which is probably why I see this as being so poor - such a contrast. DB should get a gong, David Arnold should be sent into exile.

The 25 million spent is both a drop in the ocean and not a figure of how much it actually costs the government.

Bear in mind they'll get most of that back in tax and in this climate you couldn't exactly guarantee all those people would be earning money working somewhere else.

What employees? They had to rely on 15000 volunteers who won't be paying any tax on their earnings of £0 ;)

Hardly a drop in the ocean IMO.

If they calmed down on all this ****, it wouldn't affect the games themselves at all.

The who were the best thing on there IMO.

Well, as a massive Queen fan I thought it worked brilliantly - that girl has a set of pipes on her that I think Freddie would have loved & appreciated.

Blame roger and Brian for trying to continue queen with half the original members... They need to move on - Freddie is dead and sure there was some great music but I doubt very much they would have had such success without him.

then they didnt have any of the millions spent on them did they, those millions were spent elsewhere and my point still stands.

Where the millions were spent, tax was recouped and where UK companies were used almost all goes back to the government in the end. Trade deficit is more concerning than budget.

Hardly a drop in the ocean IMO.

the deficit is over £160 billion and thats not even going into the national debt. It's a big drop but a drop nonetheless and as a one of not particularly troublesome in the grand scheme of things.

Mate, with respect, you've been reading too much stuff and getting a biased view by the sound of it, I'm a Tory btw.
Just because the deficit is so large, doesn't mean you justify spending large amounts just because it's not anywhere near the main debt.
You wouldn't carry on spending £1k if you had a £50k credit card bill you couldn't pay would you?
Even if, in your utopia of tax, all the money spent was to stay in this country, only 20% would return to the government so let's not think that's any different.

Local councils are cutting services to save £10k here and £20k there, so don't trivialise £25m, it's a large amount of money.

These games have cost this country way more than we will get back in return whatever the spiel that's put about.

My point still stands, the Olympics would still be good without all this unnecessary extravagance and obscene spending.

SP1: if your mortgage lender told you that they would reduce your mortgage by 0.016%, would you get excited about that?

Yes, I would actually, but not sure of your point.

It wasn't bad IMHO, but why did both ceremonies start so late?

Makes it difficult for the young ones to stay up to watch it all & I couldn't be bothered to stay up either, having worked a night shift Saturday into Sunday

13-08-12, 07:58 AM
Don't get me wrong I thought a lot of it was excellent but the ongoing message throughout the Olympics (which I have watched day in and out due to being on paternity leave) has been about inspiring young people. I've actually felt proud to be English for first time in a long time. Most young people wouldn't know 90% of those has beens! I mean what about Barry from aufveidesein pet (ask your dad younger readers) doing a churchill impression for the Germans!

I was away when the opening ceremony was on so downloaded it and skipped through it yesterday afternoon. Thought it was excellent and was expecting the same for the closing ceremony, turned out it was the same crop of has beens they churn out at every one of these things. Makes us look like we are stuck in the 70s and 80s. They were all pretty good though, apart from George Michael who I can't stand and Russell Brand?? WTF?? Too many Beatles references too, that was 50 years ago, move on!

They started late because the light shows wouldn't look so good in the day time and the Americans want to watch it too.

I thought it was crap and feel the need to apologise to the world of behalf of our great nation. There where some great points in amongst the dross. Opening was brilliant and the games themselves exceptional......I was even cheering for Murray to win, that's a first.

George Michael singing his new song.....dull, surprised he didn't plug his latest album.
Jessie J, don't mind her but she was over used, murdered Queen and those ridiculous childish squeaks and squeals she does....grate on me.
Spice Girls.....oh deal, Posh looked travel sick on that cab and they sounded like a bunch of girls out on the town in any Essex town on a Friday night.
Emily Sandi.........sounded quite flat.
Russell Bland.......what a knob. His only positive contribution to music is that he kept Katie Perry occupied for a few months.
The super models, I was kinda hoping they where going to fall over.

It appeared that the athletes where being held against their will, iRobot moment.

I thought the John Lennon bit was great.
The Who....can sing live, unlike all these modern, manufactured "artists". Talentless but are very marketable.
Scooters where ace.
Even Take That had me singing, So pleased Robbie Williams wasn't invited.
Beady Eye, Gallager's despite my thoughts on them, they can sing.
