It turned my stomach thinking about it - I started watching it and as previously said, admire her for doing what she's done.

Out of interest, it this also aimed at body-stocking wearers? :-)

If you don't wear your mc ppe and have a fall I will not feel sorry for you(who's at fault is irrelevant), and if it where to happen to me, I don't want sympaty, a smack behind my head would be more correct. Idiots like that is one of the main reasons insurance premiums keep going up. Why does someone need to close to death before they start thinking......
But she's not the last idiot to be born....

Indeed.... can't see a body stocking much more protection than bare skin :D

I actually quite like the bike. I hate pink but for safety I have actually thought about getting a bright pink jacket. That bike I imagine is pretty visible

And a really cynical point: it's probably her same poor judgement in bike paint design that gave her poor judgement in protective gear to start with!

Nah, in majority of accidents someone pulls out in front of you.

If they're going to miss spotting 160kg of metal, 3000 or so lumens of headlight... they're not going to spot some horrific paint or a hi vis vest either...

Plus not doing your bike up like a c*nt reduces the chance of people setting fire to you.

+1000, cringe cringe cringe!

Hat off to her for making such a difference with her life and not hiding her scars in shame. Poor lass, can't have been easy. Yes she was stupid once but everyone makes mistakes, she will have made up for it a hundred times over in her job.

I think you're preaching to the converted on here.

Stig makes the point pretty clearly, "... as a reminder to all, that these injuries were sustained whilst fully kitted up. I would have been dead had I not been wearing the correct gear." (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=64746)

You all have a choice about protective kit. Like the lass there, it's my opinion that it would be bloody daft to jump on the back of your mate at warp 10 in a pair of jeans and a T shirt.

I may even form the opinion that road rash looks sh*t.

Heh. I had a lady in a Golf fail to see 2 tons of Transit 330 yesterday. I was alongside her when she pulled out and squished her car against the van. Just keep out of range; I don't think anything makes much difference when they aren't looking in the first place..

i want to know why most of agy's posts are about safety?

we all know the risks and its a risk we all take every single time we saddle up and there is nothing that is going to stop dozy drivers getting any better at driving so no matter what you do they will still pay no attention. safety gear is only good if fitted properly and its not designed to save your life its designed to hopefully lessen the injury. ooohhh and just to add its not just 4 wheeled drivers that can be complete idiots and have no regards for other road users some bikers are just as bad and i have almost been taken out a few times with idiots not paying attention.

if you can't come to terms with the possibility of hurting/killing yourself then stay at home wrapped in bubble wrap.

every time i go out on the bike i KNOW i might not make it home but its a risk i'll willing to take. i have seen a good few friends lying in hospital beds completely mangled that would put some people off biking completely.

That's the whole reason I have the SV for road use, to bring down the risk of doing silly stuff that's best kept on track.

You have to be better than they are bad. Anticipation and pre-prepared responses and practiced actions.

No such thing as an unavoidable accident, don't let every knocked off mate saying "there's nothing I could do about it" take you out of the mindset of self-reliance and self-rescue.

Still, there's probably always a day your concentration slips and one of em gets you. Meh, such as it is. Bikes are safer than lots of fun things.

Wear what you like - it's no-ones business but your own. And don't let the pious 'safety' admonishments of fellow riders make the decisions for you.

It there were some riding wear that could guarantee no injuries whatever the incident, it might be worth the sanctimonious message to kit up every time you ride. But there emphatically isn't so any clothing choice is the acceptance of a level of risk, certainly not a choice of whether to accept risk or not. I reckon my leathers are better than yours, does this mean that you aren't taking the 'correct' level of care over your attire when you ride?
No, of course it doesn't, your choices, my choices - that's what constructs a free society. Long may it continue.

Just remember my useful acronyms:

ATG,WIWT - All the gear, when I want to.

SOTG,WIFLI - Some of the gear, when I feel like it.

ADJ&MS,S.IMBB - A denim jacket and my shoes, sometimes. It's my bloody business.

Now go and watch 'On Any Sunday'. A perfect example of how motorcycling an actually be enjoyed.

Agree! for once Chris ;)
I do truly believe a hell of a lot of accidents could have been avoided. I also refuse to believe bikes are an almost certain hospital sentence they are made out to be. I look at riders on the road and a lot of them (in my own opinion) are asking to be taken out. Maybe it just comes as a package: people who like bikes tend to be the ones who like to live on the edge and take more risks. Then there are people like me who also really like bikes but have a much higher sense of safety and self preservation so Bibio please don't tell me to stay at home and wrap myself in bubble wrap. Not nice. I'm going to continue enjoying my bike the way I choose to enjoy it. Possibly a lot more safely/slowly/cautiously/less excitingly than you but it's my life. I decide

speedyandypandy

Bibio please don't tell me to stay at home and wrap myself in bubble wrap. Not nice.
So you've tried it? What kind of bubble wrap, the one with small bubbles or the type with big bubbles?

Have you done advanced driving courses or done track days? The way to get a higher feel of safety is getting a higher level of controll & skill. The only way to do that is by training(wich atleast 50% of the car drivers should be doing).
When you raise your bar but still ride as fast as you did before raising your bar you have a higher tolerance for error.
Does that make sense? I know I'm right:rolleyes: Just not sure I express myself correctly so you understand I'm right:D

I think I would have rethink if I where you, a good course is a shortcut to stuff you will maybe use a year or longer to learn by yourself.
If I knew back then what I know today, I would have gone trackday riding my first year, instead waiting 2 years.

Speaking of the devil; just saw a man on a sports bike with a CHILD both wearing F'ALL! For crying out loud if you want to disfigure yourself it's your call but this child depends on you being a responsible adult! Unbelievable. I had to try super hard to keep my mouth shut when I was next to him at lights

Messie
17-08-12, 04:45 PM
Sorry Agy, but do you ride around all day looking for people you can feel superior to?

My advice is to stop comparing yourself to other people, then to give a little who are less than perfect, then to enjoy your ride as you want to ride it

You may really start to enjoy your bike then

agy
17-08-12, 04:47 PM

Messie
17-08-12, 04:49 PM

agy
17-08-12, 05:04 PM
If anything I feel like I'm getting attacked by a few because I chose to exercise caution. Of course I'm going to defend myself. How on earth did I ever make out to be superior?? On many occasions I pointed out that I am a novice and know bugger all. In any case how can feeling of superiority or inferiority be translated into this type of situation? This is not a mathematics exam where one person is smarter than another. This is quite a black and white situation; it's a case of potential life and death. If anyone chose to jump out of a building they'd be branded as mad. Riding with a small child on a motorcycle with no protection whatsoever bar a helmet is in MY book bordering of child neglect/abuse. I am expressing my opinion which is that anyone who rides without protection is mad. How does that statement cause you to feel that I think I'm better than anyone else? It is nothing more, nothing less - just my opinion. Some people have said the bike colour is vile. Their opinion. Does that mean they are superior?

*pulls popcorn out*

Agy, nobody's ganging up on you. You're entitled to your own opinion as of everybody else on the forum nobody's saying you're in the wrong but instead of saying YOUR opinion on the 'bike design' the woman has got you came across as telling other people how to think about it too.

A debate has to have a 2 sides - obviously but everybody who didn't share your opinion, you went mad and then defensive when somebody said something to you.

No need to 'not post again' just because somebody has said something you didn't agree with. Yes the child thing is horribly wrong I think everybody agrees but what was said to you wasn't fully pinpointed on that.
I'm sure everybody still loves you :D

Wow, essay!
