View Full Version : Oh dear.
I dropped a nut down into my exhaust pipe whilst ****ing about with the muffler... ive tried revving it to hell to get it to shoot out but now i have no diea if its in there or not. Me and the mother have rocked the bike from side to side whilst she listened and we cant hear anything rattling in the pipes.
I'm a ****ing donut :stupid:

Nightmare! You gotta find it. Don't ride it till you do.
I cant hear any knocking, tinking or any unusual sound atall from the lowest bits of the exhaust and pipes, ive leant it far over each side and stopped it suddenely down a hill and nothing.... Its a tiny nut, stainless steel so magnets aint an option... am i going to have to take the exhaust system off yet again? Or could i safely assume it got shot out the back when i revved it hard

Er, it'll likely be in the silencer, failing that somewhere in the link pipe, but definitely not have worked its way into the engine. So why worry?

I think you ca safely assume it didn't shoot out the back.
Not unless it's exactly the right size to plug the exhaust, there's not enough pressure to push a nut when the air can go round it.
Crisis averted... took the can and linkpipe off as one and the nut just fell out.... must of got stuck in the gap between the link pipe and the downpipe... i'm a happy man. Cheers for the advice (not so much the wheelie)

I'm telling you it would have worked.

Next time it happens put a hose in there, fill it with water, and it will float to the top. :)
fallout thats actually a sick idea hahaha

£10 to the Dan petrol fund if you convince someone to do that. :D
LOL well the sv is now finished, everythings on and its insured, road legal. Just awaiting crash bungs being fitted... going to take it for a short ride to see how it feeeeels
would anyone be able to help me fit the R+G bungs i have? me and winder tryed but we didnt have the tools to get the engine bar out ( needed a bigger wrench ) . Im seeing winder at his garage sundayishhhh but if anyone else could help me get them fitted sooner that would be ace (in time for the rideout).

That a metal nut will float?

Bigger wrench as in socket or just something with a long handle to get the torque? I generally slip a bit of pipe or something over the end of a wrench to get more leverage. Mind you, I am a feckin cowboy. :D
we tried that... winder almost knocked the bike over trying to get it off lol...... something with a longer handle to just get the nut off... i think haha

Jeez, that sounds painful. Have you seen a doctor? Or a psychiatrist?

I wasn't serious mate. I forgot to put the winky ;-)
You just need something longer for more leverage. The crappy 6inch ratchet in his socket set wasn't cut out for the job, even with my massive beast like 11 stone jumping on it.

I... there's not enough pressure to push a nut when the air can go round it.
After seeing all the wadding from my silencer flying out the back of my Cavalier once at mach 2 in one almighty backfire courtesy of a mechanic flooring it trying to work out why it would not rev, I always doubt "not enough pressure" comments. OK my car's exhaust was partly blocked causing the poor running but reading the first comments in this thread I had visions of a small stainless nut "shooting" the bike/car behind as the OP gunned it out of a corner :smt107. Glad it's sorted now and my imagination can go back into it's box.

There a big difference between a small nut and silencer wadding. Even if they both weight the same they are different shapes. It's similar to buoyancy in ships (or aerodynamics) There's very little area to push on a nut when it's sat on the bottom of a pipe so most of the air pressure will be going around it.
To be fair this nut is incredibly small ... 3mm at the most? and weighs literally nothing. It must of caught in the gap between the can and the pipe or maybe in the join between the link pipe and the rest of the pipework im not sure, all i know is it fell out when i took the can and link pipe off haha. I tryed revving it to around 9k and even pulled a few cheeky killswitch backfires to try and 'blast' the nut out and nothing worked... so maybe you're right spanky
Spanky is 100% right (even if the analogy is not so good).
If it had shot out, there were bigger problems in those pipes than a 3mm Nut.

Not doubting that for a second - like I said it was my imagination working overtime. Must stop watching cartoons as they really don't help the scenarios popping up in my head (plus I shudder whenever I see an anvil).

Bring it over mate I've got a four foot breaker bar if that don't budge it a torque wrench would be my next choice!;)
