I've got a petrol strimmer, just run out of 2-stroke oil :(
Is there a handy, short term, alternative? Car engine oil for instance.
Or do I need to shlep down to the local Shell?

Unless you want excessive wear on the engine I'd go down the garage.
Any oil you put in will cause more inconvenience down the road than just getting some 2 stroke now.

4 stroke oil will not work in a 2 stroke nor will 2 stroke oil work in a 4 stroke.
Both will lead to total engine failure in a matter of minutes.
Don't ask me how I know.

Nope doesn't work.
Buy the reet stuff.
Castor oil works. The basis of Castrol R (the finest smelling substance on the planet!) castor oil is high in natural Esters, the slippy stuff in modern synthetic oil. However it does lead to Coke build up eventually. But it'd get you through the weeds problem.
