View Full Version : Varying specifications of the SV?

Am i the only one that has noticed varying specifications and figures flying around for the SV for all the generations?
For example i have read about 6 different top speeds for a 99 SVs
So i thought i would ask the cheeky question,
Which Sv do you have? and What's the fastest you have got it? (obviously on the road not above 70mph, naturally :p)

Hmmm... I won't answer the second. But we had a SV650 S K9 pointy. Sexy it was. Miss it :(
you want to know how fast it will go, or what the speedo will indicate to you?

Probably how fast. I've heard so many times with bike "oh the speedo goes up to 200 but it doesn't go that fast"
Example - my 50cc run around scooter with 70 on speedo need I say more?

IIRC 124mph is the actual top speed any gear alterations will only lower that.
The indicated speed is around 10% optimistic.
Sad to say but a desrestriced RS125 is just as fast :P

My curiosity began when my Speedo was reading well above the "Top Speed" figures, and i was thinking...Are the top speed figures out there just wrong, is my speedometer optimistic (which i opted for) especially when the only "performance" modifcation my bike has is an aftermarket exhaust, but i failed to believe it would that much, if any difference to top end

Wasn't reading kph was it? ;)

Front wheel was on the ground right?

Sure was,
Speedo was reading just under 140, but took a while to get there after the 120 mark

That's about right 136 ish is what it reads and your doing around 10mph less

I took mine to a Private Test Track (Your Honour!) and gave it a fist full. On the straight and with my being tucked behind the screen, my speedo read 126MPH and the engine speed was just below the red line and it felt like I was not far from max. I don't know how fast it was really going, but what I do know is that it was far too fast and my bum hole was trying to bite the seat. Not bad for an old K3 with a bar conversion and useless tart on board. :D

the kph speedo ends at 240km/h(149mph), the needle will go past it by a bit, or so I've heard *cough*. Back then(2002) the bike was only a few years old, I had a BMC racing airfilter, Factory dynojet kit, Akrapovic titanium racing system and it was tuned in. Never done that again with the SV, takes to long to get there.

My speedo has read 147mph once (Long stretch of private track, ahem...), but similar comments to speedtandypandy above, it look a long long time to get there, and it was with the bike being maybe 18 months old, with a full race exhaust system, racing airfilter, and ecu mapped to suit.
I also echo what others have said about the speedo not telling you the real speed due to over-reading, and not to mention extra small differences the effect different tyre sizes on the front will have on the speedo readings too.

I have an App on my phone that logged 122mph (On track obviously... Diablo superbiker if anyone wants to try). That seems about right although it has logged me doing 160 mph on a not very fast run so although its kinda accurate, sometimes the GPS is lost and it gives false readings.
Speedo's will always over read as standard as its illegal to under read. Obviously changing gearing will alter this hence the need for a speedo adjuster.

Same as Jayne. 125mph indicated, touching the red line, on a track. Not sure how anyone can do 145+ without having performance upgrades and also looking at that needle in the red line waiting for a big bang! :)

You must have had non oem gearing as stock the sv will not reach the redline in 6th
Stock setup
indicated = ~140
actual = ~128
Around 125-130 is the physical max of the bike on standard gearing. Like all things factors influence this. Like rider weight tyre pressures drag incline decline etc. The maths as in gear ratios tyre circumference and engine out out put the actual top speeds as above. Anyone saying they have had 150 out of a stick SV is a liar liar pants on fire :D

Had my naked touch 135 indicated once (2 up :-P), it was just kissing the limiter with +3 at the back, which I think makes it just a touch over 130 real. that was with a /70 profile front tyre so a bit less speedo error than expected.
It did take a big hill and a long time though!

See when my speedo was reading just short of 140, it was far from being on the Red Line, and mine is a 99 Curvy
Few weeks ago I did 132mph (211km/h) on a Highway in Germany (nice feeling going this fast and doing nothing illegal) going a bit uphill and fully loaded (tankbag, panniers and rollbag with tent, sleeping bag, mattress and other stuff in it) so I'd say not that bad. But can't say that it would go any further...it would most certainly not :) ... it was like ..209....210....211....210.... :)
In theory on standard gearing the SV should not red line in top. It hasn't got the torque.

That would be 143mph, maybe down a bloody big hill with a tailwind but I very much doubt it.

Are as fast once, because it'll nip! :p

Yep maxes out of torque about 9k in top with tankbag, rollbag, tent and sleep baf on (Airfield M'laud)

I could believe that on yours, I wouldn't like to follow like!!!
The /70 tyre reduces the overread to less than 5% IMO
127 on spaznav 130 odds on speedo (non stock speedo) and still had loads to go but bottled out.
