View Full Version : Am I using too much oil?
Topped my oil up to the full line on Sunday just before a ride. Done about 300 miles and checked it tonight when I got back from work. Was on the low line and topped it up and rekon I am using about 300ml/300 miles.
Does that sound too much or spot on?
Thanks in advance.

Fry much yes.
I never check my oil (or anything else) if that was normal my bike would have blown up thousands of miles ago.
TBH it would sound like quite a lot even if you were riding a two stroke.

Check the sump plug and washer as its likely to be leaking from there.
Also is the bike excessively smokey?

Wouldn't say it's the end of the world, but definitely too much. Think my SV gets down from full to half way down after 6 or 7 rides outs. So maybe 1000 miles.
Edit: Could be wrong on those figures! Probably does better than that.
100ml in 100 miles ermmm yes that a lot. lucky if i go threw 100ml in 3500 miles

in 3000 miles ive used 600ml of oil. no smoke, bike runs fine. cant find a problem, if it goes pop ill just have to rebuild it. some bikes seems to drink it. but yours does sound excessive

i can go between services (3500-4000 miles) without the oil dropping at all......you may have an issue
No smoke, runs fine, just drinks oil! Any suggestions on what it may be? Sump plug is tight and completely dry around it, no visible oil leaks. Im stumped!

The oil has to be going somewhere.
Does it lose more after you've been for a ride with fallout or thunderace by any chance?

Oil level dropping & Not leaking. Either its being burnt or its in the radiator.
Have you checked for smoke on the overrun? Or looked in the rad for the rainbow effect of oil and water mixed?
My 2000 curvy after 26K doesn't need topping up between oil changes.

Is this a one off or does it always use loads? If it just happened the once you may have misread the level.Either way keep a very close eye on it and see how it goes.Have you checked all the breather hoses are on,and there is nothing coming out around the gearbox sprocket?
