Abba stand. Lifts from the swing arm pivot so no weight on the back wheel which enables jobs that involve taking the back end apart (shock change etc).

All you need is a jack or similar and you can lift the front too.

Plus no need for bobbins etc.

Seconded. The type that lifts at the swingarm pivot (Abba type) makes the best support by far. You won't regret it.

if you have a garage to work in then an abba stand ratchet straps and some eye bolts bolted on the ground at the back wheel. this should let you do almost everything you need to do to the bike.

I picked up a cheap paddock stand from these guys (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/fiberglass-shop) and to be honest for my more basic needs, it is perfect. I can even safely use it to work on the 1100, which is a heavy brute of a bike.

A close friend of mine uses an Abba stand and he combines it with other lifting tools so that he can completely strip his race bike down to the bare frame, which he could not do so with just a basic stand like mine. :D

I'd like something I don't have to change when I get a bigger bike.

ABBA stand is perfect, you just buy the appropriate adaptors for each bike you buy, and keep the main stand whatever.

Its a real solid piece of kit, and will last a lifetime

I dont have rafters or anything either, if I need to lift the front I use a cheapy car scissor jack under the engine block. Job jobbed.
