I checked my sight glass and it was coming down to just above 1/2 between the upper and lower level so I added 200cc of oil bring it back to the upper level mark.Since the oil was changed I have done 3537 miles and when I bought the oil it was a 4.5lt container [Sump and filter 4lt to full] so I still have another 2500 miles to do before the next service and I still could top it up again if needs be as I still have 300cc of the original oil. Considering this was some hard motorway mileage on a bike with over 50,000miles on the clock how does it compare to an SV's oil consumption of similar mileage.

I am not complaining about the oil consumption as every engine uses some oil by design but more interested in the comparison between a triple and V usage

'prillia had used 125 cc in 2500 miles of mainly B roads .
12000 miles. Total engine use

What is the mileage on the engine? That would probably equate to about the same then as both are 1000cc engines.

Should you wonder what I am doing,I am trying to find out if smaller multi pot engines have a bigger oil consumption than larger pot engines bearing in mind that an in line 4 is normally much higher reving than a single,V,or triple to produce approximately the same power.

My sv with 35k, camswap, ridden hard, around 4 litres in last 2-3000 miles. Doesn't burn too bad when im going easy but when i thrash it it just drinks oil.

Bikes done 26k miles, just got back from a 650 mile weekend in Cornwall and used 500 ml of oil. That's quite a lot for me. Only started recently aswell :s.

Posted mileage as an edit.
Most of it seams to end up in the air box.

Mine's done about 11k I think (different clocks so can't remember) but doesn't appear to use up any oil. Nice newish engine muahaha

I am coming to the conclusion with the feed back I am getting from this site and various others that piston size and number isn't so releveant but more engine revs is.I appreciate that any engine pushed hard will use more oil but I am trying to apply this to general usage.
Running the Sprint ST 4500-5000 rpm which is half throttle equates to 70-80mph and it is very seldom I get above 6000rpm in top gear as I am then in the automatic ban section.

Shutting the throttle on over run does suck oil past seals and rings. The higher the reves the more suck.

And this is how i ride when i go nuts, i use lots of engine braking as well as brakes. At what point do i rebuild my top end? Because it seems bad enough now. squirrel_hunter recons i could probably just keep riding it and topping it up but im not so sure, it feels like tis getting worse. My bike is not smoking except on high rev engine braking.

How much oil per 1000 miles .
If its an SV id ask YC what he thinks.

Unfortunately its hard to say because my speedo has been broken since April. But ive done somewhere between 2000-3000 miles and burnt 4L. So lets say 1.4L per 1000 miles. Im topping up my oil as often as im tanking my bike. I will however fix my speedo, change my oil and filter and then record how much oil i put in in the first 1000 miles. Ill get back to you on that in a few weeks.
