I've just risen my new sv home on a 350 mile journyand discoveredthat the nearly new continental rear tyre has a nail in it. Was wondering if it could be repaired?

yes it can (if it's in a certain area of the tread) both temp & permanent, do a search it's been covered many times.

For that price, did you leave your bike with them or did you give them the wheel and tyre already taken of the bike?

I think around £20 off bike or £30 on bike are ballpark numbers. From what I've paid anyway.

It was £25 on the bike, I just rode up asked if they did permanent puncture repairs, he said yes, I said can you do it now and 10 minutes later he was putting the bike in the shop and getting on with it

Was this a bikeshop or tyre shop?
thats kinda ok, paid £30 for a car wheel once at a tyreshop.

A good place will remove the tyre, check for damage and if safe, will repair and re-balance the wheel once the tyre is back on. It is worth the cost if done well and you keep a good condition tyre going.

The bad news comes if the tyre is damaged though.

I recently had a puncture in my rear tyre. It was a nail right in the middle of the tread. First I went to a tyre place that sells car & bike tyres. They would not repair it and suggested I go to a bike shop as the plugs used for car & bike tyres are different and you should not use the wrong one, especially in a bike.

The main dealer bike shop had a look and pulled the nail out to see if it had gone in straight, which it had so it could be repaired. They removed the wheel, repaired it, put it back on & checked the balancing for £38.

Well I'm gona have to say you can't, I spoke to some official at Avon as I have storm 2 ultras, apparently the tyres used to be separately bound with that wire stuff but now it's all one carbon fibre wire, I've had 2 punctures and never actually worn out a pair of tyres, first time front wheel second time back, if it's the front then it's a definite new tyre but when I got A puncture on the back I left a temporary repair kit in for about 3 month no problems, as I come to fix it permanently the wire inside snapped and caused a huge bubble so that's when I rang Avon, they say you can't repair any they said its ILLEGAL, surprised but okay. They also said if you get a puncture that is 1mm deep or shorter they will give you a new tyre for free

I think that's all, I have the tyre at work so I'll post a pic of it

"can't" I think you mean they say you can't, because I assure you; you can, I have and not died or anything.

Avon won't give you a new tyre if you get a 1mm puncture, I think you've got that wrong, they will give you a replacement if you get a puncture in the first 1000 miles or 1mm of wear (whichever is first), but they have been doing that for ages.

Okay pal keep your hair on, I'm just telling tommy experience so we can all compare and that is what Avon have told me, so you probably got lucky with your tyre or it might not be one single bound wire who knows but here are some pics of my puncture, you can't really see the bubble as its not on the wheel and there is no air pressure but my puncure was right in the middle and they say you can fix these.....http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/06/a8aza8yn.jpg

haven't got hair, you made a statement with I know to be incorrect,. I'm not questioning what you were told, as companies will cover their own backs whenever possible, and you want to buy a new tyre each time that's up to you, I didn't "get lucky" but had them prorofessionally repaired by people who make their living with bike tyres, having used the orignal Storms and the later Ultra's for many years on bikes from a superduke to a Pegaso , you may have got advice and indeed found "an" example to demonstrate, but it doesn't mean it can't be done, because it has with no ill effects far more than once.

Interesting to read about Avon. I too have Storm 2 Ultras and as I mentioned in my previous post it was repaired and looks & feels good. Only clocked up a few 100 miles so far but have included a few good blasts with it.
