View Full Version : Do I need a new clutch cable?

Bike info: 2002 curvy S, 13,000miles.

Cable adjustment is max'd out at the lever, and last time I adjusted the cable at the engine end I recall it being towards the end of adjustable limit.

Oil has been changed recently and is sitting perfectly in the middle of upper and lower limits.

Chain tension adjusted about three weeks ago, seems to be ok, although suspect a new chain & sprockets isn't far off being on the shopping list.

The bite point on the clutch is now right at the end of the lever, and under hard acceleration this morning it felt like it was slipping a tiny amount towards top end of rev range. I much prefer my bite point closer to the grip & feel out the changes, felt like it was an on/off switch today!!

So do we think I'm in need of a new clutch cable? I'm off for a longish ride this saturday so I need to sort this. If a cable is even worth a try I'll order one.

it's very very unlikely that the cable has stretched that much and if the cable has always been at the extremes of adjustment then you might have a problem with the worm gear. most common problem is people putting it back on wrong and not putting the half moon bracket on top of the gear body. could also be that the worm gear needs adjusting rather than the clutch cable. there is a how to on the forum somewhere.

Have you adjusted the lifter at the bottom end - you need to start with that before doing the cable itself.

I would adjust the worm gear first, then set the cable. In fact I did a bodge job on video.

If that does not work, try to copy and paste this.

Very handy, thanks. Remembered that I actually have done this on my previous pointy but it was so long ago I forgot all about it haha!!

Will have a good old rummage around and see if I can fettle it reyt.

Yep, we tried to bodge it round yours before accepting defeat and ordering another cable down padgetts

Do this first:

Slacken off cable adjusters at top and bottom, loosen lifter locknut, back out screw a bit, ensure that lifter arm is as far down as it will go, gently turn screw in until it contacts pushrod, back it out a bit, (~1/8th of a turn), then nip up the locknut, roughly adjust cable with lower adjuster - not too tight - then with top adjuster ensure that there remains a little slack all the way from lock to lock.

If that fails to help then the lifter might be goosed.

Update - gave it all a good clean & lube last night, carried out SS adjustment, bang on this morning.

Happy Days! :) thanks all.
