OK so I don't know the validity of this report but if true, or even close to true, this has to be great news.:sunny:

(Reuters) - German solar power plants produced a world record 22 gigawatts of electricity per hour - equal to 20 nuclear power stations at full capacity - through the midday hours on Friday and Saturday, the head of a renewable energy think tank said.
Norbert Allnoch, director of the Institute of the Renewable Energy Industry (IWR) in Muenster, said the 22 gigawatts of solar power per hour fed into the national grid on Saturday met nearly 50 percent of the nation's midday electricity needs.
The record-breaking amount of solar power shows one of the world's leading industrial nations was able to meet a third of its electricity needs on a work day, Friday, and nearly half on Saturday when factories and offices were closed.
Government-mandated support for renewables has helped Germany became a world leader in renewable energy and the country gets about 20 percent of its overall annual electricity from those sources.
Germany has nearly as much installed solar power generation capacity as the rest of the world combined and gets about four percent of its overall annual electricity needs from the sun alone. It aims to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent from 1990 levels by 2020.

Why doesn't the Gov pay for every house in the UK to have Solar panels on the roof? Surely that would reduce our need for power stations, I know its not a constant power source, but I bet you could have a UPS that powers things like lights once the sun goes in?
Certainly true that if you want to see solar panels, go to Germany. Everything that doesn't move is covered in them. I saw a new supermarket on the outskirts of a town with an adjoining solar farm the same size, obviously part and parcel of the development.
I think they're generally pretty ugly, but it's free energy.
As an aside, I do wish journalists would learn a little bit of science, "gigawatts of power per hour" is wrong terminology, they either mean "gigawatts of power" or "gigawatt-hours" (which is energy) or maybe they mean something else?

That's interesting, but why not have both? I saw one of those James May thingies the other day, where some yankydoodle boffins have built a machine that creates petrol from thin air. Basically it uses solar energy to power a laser that can create the necessary heat to rebond carbon (from air) and hydrogren (from water) into hydrocarbons (i.e. like petrol).
So basically they make petrol from thin air and water using the sun. That's pretty bad ass.

I was thinking about this a few years ago and wondered if a small set of solar panels and a small wind turbine mounted on top if each house could generate enough electricity to make it worthwhile. Even to generate enough to power internal lights...if an entire house was set up to be energy effiecient I.e led or low wattage bulbs etc the impact would be greater. Or the entire lighting ring to be on a 12v ring running from a car battery which can be charged from the solar panels and wind turbine.

Just how green is solar power. How much carbon is generated in the production of a panel?
They best use of free or excess energy was in my opinion the build of pumped storage hydro systems such as Dinorwig in Wales. Where excess electricity is used to pump water to higher reservoirs and when demand hits the water is then released through turbines to generate electricity.
Although I have to say if it wasn't for the nimbys, I would like to see a rise in small local combined heat and power systems. Probably powered from refuse digesters. Or even small local fuel cell systems where hydrogen could be generated from the use of daytime solar and then used to fuel the night time fuel cells.
On my recent trip to Germany I was impressed by how many solar and wind farms they have.

yep, after a full year with panels my electricity consumption from the grid has dropped 75%!
The sunny days are fading now but this past week is the first time I've had to buy any electricity since March. it works!

Apparently some bloke has invented a way of making solar panels at a 10% of the cost using a tin based material rather than the expensive Cadmium.
It's only 20% less efficient too.

Glad it's not just me that annoys.

Yes, Germany's adoption of green power is far better than most
I think using a combination of wind, tidal, hydro, refuse digesters, methane gas and solar panels would help to reduce our reliance on generated electricity.
Until someone finds some dilithium crystals we're still going to need power stations, but lets reduce the need

It would be a good point if the same issue didn't exist for conventional and nuclear power stations.
The further we move towards renewable energy the more the power needs of even constructing the generating devices can be met by renewables.
What we really need is a plant (a plant plant, not heavy machinery) that generates electricity, then we really have 'free' energy.

Up until April this year there were grants and 'generous' payouts for each kilowatt hour of electricity generated by solar panels. This is why there were so many new installations up to 2010. The aim was to drive the cost of installation down using the power of mass production. Most of the EU countries have done this, most notably Germany and Italy. Now the government reduced the feed in tariff payments for new installations since April as the money for it was running out. Same has happened in other EU states.
In Germany I read that major power producers were suffering financially because they cannot sell power at peak times at a premium because the peaks are ironed out by solar generation (sorry cannot find article on BBC right now). This in turn has a knock on effect for the tax take from their profits and is a side effect no one thought of apparently, although it seems obvious now.
So I think government help with solar installs has now had it's day.

I think the debate is largely pointless. Most if not all the oil is going to be used up, wether it is in 30 years carrying on like we currently do, or 300 years through imposing strict "Don't use oil" legislation.
As it get more and more expensive there will be a greater incentive to create more energy efficient stuff and better renewable sources (and yes the possibility of things like Nuclear Fussion, they are currently working on what should be the first self burning plasma reactor, which would be pretty awesome).
The slack from any time mis-match between the two will be taken up by Nuclear power. (i could debate this part all day)
Mr. Spiers post shows a big part of the problem of the supposed debate, and Tim stated it in more depth. Its not just the operational cost/carbon cost, it is also the production cost and waste. Tin is an absolutely filthy metal to mine, but this is not accounted for. The Prius is another case in point, its not that efficient (you'd get better MPG on a combined cycle with a 1.6l diesel engine in the same car), and the environmental production costs mean that on every measure a jeep cherokee (built almost completely from recycled materials) is more environmentally friendly over its whole life cycle.

I think there's going to be lots of surprises. While the natural oil may be running out, and we all know oil companies would like to sell us all of it, to the
very last drop for some very large profits, I don't actually believe it's going to be the end.
Here's why: these companies know the natural resources are running out. These companies don't plan on going extinct and have the large financial pull to ensure their survival. They have been buying patents for years to keep alternative fuel production methods and alternative propulsion methods away from public knowledge / usage.
I can bet my left nut that these companies will slowly bring some of these methods out once the oil runs out and will use them to sell you even more overpriced "green" fuels. We, my friends, will be economic slaves to these companies for years and generations to come, unless we change our ways in a drastic manner, because the kind of power they have doesn't just fade away or disappears over night.

I, too, am very keen on seeing how the fusion will work out. Firstly because it is highly scientifically attractive and secondly because deep down inside I will rejoice at the new found freedom of the human race. And when I say that, I mean it in two ways:
1. The first and most obvious is the excess of energy which will allow us to fancy stuff like colonize mars and maybe travel even further, whilst having the resources to build anything we like back home.
2. The second is much more difficult to see. The development of fusion is highly political. Let me explain.
The design which has received the most attention is the tokamak design. They have been working on it since the 60's and I don't believe they're that much closer to its making than they were 10 years ago. The EU is throwing HUGE amounts of money at it (20 BILLION euros so far, with far more expected to go into it). The project to build a functioning one was initiated in 2006, with 10 years for building it and 20 for running it. This will, however, be only a "proof of concept", i.e. it will only show that it is possible to produce more power through fusion than it is required to obtain it. A tokamak powerplant is expected to cost in the region of 100 BILLION euros.
Here are some bad reasons for building tokamaks:
a) It will only be able to run using deuterium/tritium fusion, which is not "clean" - it produces radioactive waste. Not as much as a fission, but still plenty.
b) It's a design with possible ecological implications. Every such plant requires large amounts of pollutants.
c) Tokamaks are not the most effective fusion designs by a mile. The record for the most fusion reactions is not held by such a design, it is held by a polywell. You can watch a google video about it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk6z1vP4Eo8
So here is what I think about the fusion program of ITER: it's an extremely expensive proposal, with little shown results. It's sucking funds from other more promising designs (the polywell isn't the only one). It is the result of political inertia - the people who make the funding decisions are also the ones benefiting from these decision, so they keep giving the funds only to themselves.
Soooo... if I do get to see fusion within my lifetime, I'll know that it's because of the fact that a big piece of bureaucracy has been skipped and because EU society has gotten over a big rotten piece of it.

I know of a team who are working on producing hydrogen from the methane produced by human waste, which will then go to power the fuel cells which can run a vehicle.

It isn't particularly hard to chemically decompose methane into hydrogen.
My question would be scale, if you digested with good efficiency one persons worth of waste is it sufficient energy to fuel them for that day?
I'd say nowhere near, but it's a good source of energy which is a shame to waste and a strong greenhouse gas as well.

Yeah, absolutely. It also happens to be the one I know anything about really. I understand where they are in the process, well I did. I've forgotten all my physics since getting a "Proper" job.
I am also generally cagey about theories that the oil companies are holding back tech. (not saying they are or aren't, just suspicious of the theories). But either way, yeah the oil is going to be used and agree its getter to reduce reliance on companies like that.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a full blown theory. More like a gut feeling (probably coming from the part in me that thinks everything is one big conspiracy..) for which I have nothing more than anecdotal arguments. But it would make sense that they would like to ensure their survival in some manner. And this manner makes a lot of sense (doesn't make it true though).

It is fair to say that every company in the energy business is doing R&D into alternative technologies. Whether they come to market is simply a commercial decision. No big conspiracy.
If the oil companies had a device that could have the fuel consumption of an engine. They would make a fortune marketing/licensing it and still have the fuel for the next 100 years instead of 50. Thereby ensuring their longer term security.
It isn't particularly hard to chemically decompose methane into hydrogen.

I wish I knew more about it to answer this question. All I know is that they are reverse engineering an old vehicle that did run on fuel cells in order to better understand it. I don't know how far they've got with the methane extractor

This is the sort of thing I am much more hopeful of. Getting little chunks of power right at the point were they are needed. It will take a while for it to all evolve, though.

Apart from that there is the claw back from the National Grid 48.2X486 units=£234:25.
I know of no other way a £9000 investment can give me a better return for my money

Depends on the definition on return for your money....
The £9000 has been spent, so until you've saved £9000 you're not actually getting a return.
So, assuming your combined bill was £1000 per year and is now £200 that's £800 saved. Assuming the grid clawback will pay you £800 per year, that's £1600 saving per year (Which is not to be sneezed at!).
Assuming that stays constant, you'll start getting a return after 5.6 years. If you want to be really pedantic you should include the effects of inflation too, which will extend that time period a little. If you took out a loan to pay for the £9000 then you also need to factor in the interest costs on the loan.
All figures dragged off the top of my head and may bear no resemblance to reality....

One local to us has been burning it off for 20 years or more. Hard to estimate the power dissipated though like.
So, assuming your combined bill was £1000 per year and is now £200 that's £800 saved. Assuming the grid clawback will pay you £800 per year, that's £1600 saving per year (Which is not to be sneezed at!).
My solar earnings have been closer to £1900 this year which has been fantastic, my elec bill is at least £1200 lower per year using a 4kWp solar installation.

4KW is a bloody lot of power, how much have you seen coming in?
on a really sunny day I get around 3.6 3.7 kW, less when its cloudy obviously. An average sunny day this year will peak at around 2.5 kW or so. But remembering that this starts when the sun comes up and continues to around 5pm for our house, that really starts to add up. As of last Saturday we've generate just over 4 MWh in a year.

I'm doing the same with LEDs, they are pricey though so taking my time and replacing when other bulbs fail mostly. Also no noticeable heat output from them which cant be said for the nuclear powered halogen bulbs we have in our kitchen.
The panels vary in quality from different manufacturers. Mine I think are claimed to have a lifespan of around 20 years with a slight fade off of generation efficiency during that time. I would expect in 10 or 15 years or so it may be more cost effective to switch to more efficient panels than to try and milk the ones I have, but I'll do the maths closer to the time to calculate that.
Here's my normal elec meter reading over the past year, its fairly obvious towards the start the point when we installed the panels.

The roof isnt massive, but it is full of panels :-)
Its 21 x 190W panels, my guess is about 25 sq m or so.
