View Full Version : Films that, at least for you, don't live up to the hype.

I'll start this off.
I'm sat watching The Exorcist on ITV4, 1 1/2 hours in and it's still not got going, virtually nothing has happened. I know it's nearly 40 years old but how this was banned and lauded is beyond me!

Inception. Prometheus.
I agree with the exorcist. Same about clockwork orange they should have remained banned for the sole reason of being boring!
Recently I watched all of the LOTR films. Thought they were okay but not as brilliant as everyone makes out.

You should ignore the hype. The hype always either comes form media who need to sell papers etc. or friends who need to grow a brain. How many times has your intellectual mate told you to go and watch a film? Rarely, I bet. It's always your drunk mate at the pub who can be amused by a little squeaking fart or a 'your mum' joke. Really doesn't take much to impress that sort of person!
I find most films underwhelming, but I don't listen to any hype, so am not normally disappointed. I agree about the Exorcist, but all old films a pretty whack by today's standards. All their ideas have been stolen and reused a hundred times by more modern films so they can't compete on an even footing. When I watch old films, I try to adopt the mindset of the time, so I can at least appreciate the ground breaking ideas/effects etc.
Alternatively, I just watch porn. That never gets old, unless you click the GrannyLoving category. :)

Puss in Boots in 3D. Turns out it's a kids film. I was expecting lesbian shoe fetish porn.

haha :D - made me giggle.
In truth I can't remember the last film that was decent. Recent years have seen the production mentality and just churning out dross for the sake of keeping the turnstiles spinning...

The Hunger Games, was good but not THAT good
Also TED, was mildly funny but I've seen funnier episodes of Family Guy

The last spiderman. Normally a big fan of the comic book films, but this one was tedious. (and he doesn't shot his own web, its some device wtf?!?)

Also ( and I know this will be blasphemous here) I was a bit underwhelmed by Closer to the Edge. It was said to get into the head of why these guys risk their lives for the race. I just found it focused on the death side of the race and how these guys cope with that monkey on their back, and far less about the why.

The Human Centipede. Nowhere near as gross as I was expecting and not that good even as a story. I found the interview with the director more entertaining....because he is truly crazy!
I prefer the films that you think will be a waste of two hours, but turn out to be incredible.

Everything with Steve Martin in it.
Roxanne was boring and the way he portrayed Bilko was nothing like the classic comedy of Phil Silvers.

Don't forget the dreadful Inspector Clouseau/Pink Panther remakes.

I'm a man in orthopedic shoes here. Didn't realise that. I still prefered the self made idea from the spiderman a few years back.

I try not to listen to the hype, especially from the media but if freinds recommend a film I'm more inclined to give it a go. When it comes to old films I never expect them to be as good as todays but generally enjoy them. There's sometimes nothing better then watching an old random black and white film you've never heard of, they seem more atmospheric even if the acting and storylines are pretty dreadful.
Another controversial choice maybe for films that underwhelmed me, The Godfather series, couldn't get into it at all.
Some more modern films, agree with Inception, sent me to sleep. Clash Of The Titans (Loved the original). Haven't even bothered with Twilight or The Hunger Games.

Debbie does Dallas was misleading as contrary to the title, the film is not set in Dallas nor does Debbie 'do' anyone in or from Dallas... ;)

I only know because it was one of the things that the earlier film was criticised for, goes to show you just can't please everyone.

Nicholas Cage is one of those anomalies. Terrible actor, yet in a lot of films that would benefit from a good actor. Really raved about, but totally agree, rubbish at everything! At least Arny was a novelty!
The last Batman movie, I've been tempted to go to the cinema again, just to walk out in the middle of it...

I very rarely go to the cinema but having seen the play way back in the mists of time we had a family outing. Very slow, very boring, but I jumped out of my skin several times! Daughter loved it but then she's odd.

What was the twist in that? Didn't they spend ages fighting the robot things, then at the end they just died by themselves? So if they'd just played a game of card in a basement somewhere, it would've all resolved itself. Good plot. lol

The original film ended in the same way ,but the new one started with a bang and then quickly turned into a damp squib .The original one was full of tension right through to the final part , where the last hope was to hide in the church and pray .The new one just fizzled out .I knopw independance day was full of the Americans yet again saving the day , but at least it kept buzzing alone up to the end.

The twist was that it ended exactly like all war of the worlds stories.
Apart from lacking he awesome epilogue where the aliens win.

I have to admit, all of the hype about that film made it sound like the greatest movie ever and when I finally saw it, I was bored and thought that they could have told the say story in the time it takes Wile E Coyote to buy more junk from ACME and saved me the evening to watch a good film like...
The Road from a couple of years back, complete waste of time.
How could you not like that film, it was beautiful?! Mind you I quite enjoyed another Cormac McCarthy book that was turned into a movie, No Country for Old Men. Both of them were in their own ways, bleak, dark and painfully sad.
There is a scene in The Road that always moves me to tears ( I loved it so much I bought the DVD) and that is when the Dad and the boy lose everything that they have and then find the man who stole it from them. The Dad and the boy argue because the Dad insists that the thief is left with nothing, not even his clothes, pretty much condemning him to die. The scene is as much about the Father's loss of humanity as it is about the pathetic actions of the thief. Powerful, hard hitting and very emotive. Makes me cry every time.
Just had a chat with the Wife and she liked Avatar, but felt that The Road was a miserably dull movie. :smt017

Now, that version of the film I did think was quite cool, I loved the effects of people being turned to dust and the look of agony on their faces when it happened.
I am starting to think that I am not a very nice person! :smt081

Do bare in mind though, War of the Worlds was published in 1898 and was a magnificent work in its day, possibly even the first published story of an Alien invasion.

Exactly, after over 100 years they've had time to improve on it instead of going backwards.
Should have just updated jeff Wayne's version.

Well maybe it wasn't a complete waste of time but was hyped up as an amazing film at the time and was a bit of a let down. I've not read the book either maybe I'd have liked it more then.
I've not got round to watching No Country For Old Men yet, that was certainly another film that was well lauded at the time though so I'm not expecting much but I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it.

He's a little tosser but has been in some good movies.

Not sure how you can say an Adam Sandler film doesn't live up to the hype, it's an Adam Sandler film, they are all exactly the same and I don't think they are hyped up to be anything else.
War of the Worlds, what a crappy ending. Skyline, was a pile of poo and Woman in Black didn't do it for me either.

Completely agree. Worst film I've seen this year
In Bruge; Dull as f**k and could have been done with in 30 minutes.
Armagedon; I know it's sci-fi but the continuity issues wreck it within the first 10 minutes.
Incredible Hulk and Hulk; Lame and very drawn out.
Pulp Fiction; a film with an ego, and a story line that was basically a woman taking an OD and other people trying to cover it up.

I liked in Bruges.
