View Full Version : Starting/flat battery?

I've had problems before with starting, sometimes after leaving for just 3 days (in damp conditions) but on the other hand have left for 10 days and no issues at all, so there is no definite pattern.

Recently returned off holiday and fired up immediately (warm weather, yes we have had some lol)

Today I only just managed to get it started after a few attempts and misfires, once running everything was fine, went for a 6 mile or so spin.

I pulled up after seeing a mate and left the bike running for about 10 minutes with lights and indicator on, I then rode a few yards home and tried to start it up again but wouldn't. I've read the battery won't charge on idle?? So perhaps leaving it ticking over drained what charge I put in??

I connected the trickle charger up and 10 minutes later fired up right away.

When riding there are no issues of stalling etc and have searched for the reg/rec issues but nothing is clear.

Just asking what issues a faulty reg/rec would show??

Have read cutting out/odometer resetting/other electrical or running issues but I had none of these.

I suspect the battery is dodgy.

I don't have a multimeter so cannot check.

so get yourself a multimeter (hardly a fortune (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Professional-Digital-Multimeter-Volt-Meter-Ammeter-AC-DC-OHM-Tester-Range-Buzzer-/280796394464?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement _Equipment_ET&hash=item4160c4f3e0)), as it costs less than boiling a new battery you may attach to a duff reg/rec.

Cheers Mark.

there is a trickle charge going into the battery a tick over, but the lights and indi's on will drain more than the charge at tick over. if you rode at 5K+ for half mile there should of been enough charge to start it again.

have you check the fluid level this caused my VFR alot of trouble, luckily the people looking after her are better at that sort of thing. I've had a lot of messing with reg/rec in the past, if I had brought my multi meter to Derby I would come have a look from you but its in Wolverhampton, and as a poor student I wont even go home to get the thingy Barclays give you to log onto online banking!

If you want me to have a quick look, get a multimeter, a few beers (anything but carling or stella) and i can have a look for you.

Everyone should have one of these. So cheap and so useful.

Sunshine, thanks for the offer, my in law has a multimeter so will nick it off him, I just didn't have one to hand at time of posting. Been on charge all night and fires fine, when I get the revs up the headlight dims as opposed to brightens which I have read somewhere is an indication of RR fault. Time will tell.

Some figures from testing I followed This (http://www.electrosport.com/media/pdf/fault-finding-diagram.pdf)

Off = 12.65

2500 rpm = 13.65

5000 rpm 13.45

These were fluctuating very slightly I ran the test about 3 times once the bike was warm and the readings were always around these figures.

The linked website suggests everything is fine with the charging system, but other posts here suggest not.

Have seen posts about turning lights on and getting readings.

Advice appreciated please..

lights off, the 5krpm reading would be about 14.5v slightly lower with lights on.
Tick over should be about 12.5-13v if i remember correctly never heard of testing at 2.5krpm. hth

Idle was 13.2v

So what's the verdict? Battery on it's last legs or possible R/R fault.

There's varying opinions on internet.

Have read if R/R fault it would go over 14.8v??

Plus I connected via the trickle charger connection as opposed to the actual battery terminals and have been told the readings may be slightly lower because of this??
