View Full Version : Aplle iPad Update to iOS 6 - HUGE RANT !!!

BEWARE anybody using ipads with iOS 5, when the prompt to update to iOS 6 may have implications that you don’t want:-
My rant:-
Apple have updated the operating system for the iPad. Updates and improvements are normally good, but….
I purchased one for my daughter (she is autistic) and she loves the YouTube app. It’s the only thing she uses. Well worth the money, she loves it.
However, since they decided to do the software update to iOS 6 (yesterday) they have removed the YouTube app and it is no longer available (something to do with a licence). There may also be other things that have changed, I have not checked further yet.
Not a big deal to most people. But to my daughter the loss of the YouTube app on the iPad is devastating, she sobbed for hours last night and is also unwell and off school, so the iPad would normally comfort her. Very frustrating, very annoying and as we all know these small changes can have a huge impact to certain people.
Anybody uses the iPad and in particular the YouTube app then they “SHOULD NOT” do the upgrade to iOS 6 because they will lose the YouTube app and it is not possible to get it again. Apple say that it will be available but could be a ‘few’ months! It is possible to use the link via Google homepage, but for my daughter this is not an option. Change is bad.
My daughter can’t be the only child that relies heavily on her iPad for comfort, entertainment and education.
I now have to go and purchase another tablet PC (Android) that is able to run the YouTube app (not iPad). I imaging that a lot of families are not so fortunate to be able to afford such luxuries. So anybody that already paid around £300 for an iPad may not be able to buy something else to replace it easily. This is a shame and I imagine a huge error by the Apple team, an organisation that normally does such a good job!
Interestingly if I had not done the update I would still have access to the app and its not possible to roll back to iOS 5. Grrr.
Apple To$$ers

Can you not download the YouTube app from the App Store? It's free :)

Nope, they removed it from the app store for iOS 6.
It's still there if you have iOS 5 though.

Whilst I agree about Apple /= c-units (sure as hell not letting iOS anywhere near my iPad), you 'could' always just stick a shortcut to Youtube.com onto the home screen of your iPad.

For all intent and purpose, it does the same job (arguably better than the app if truth be told), and should appease your wee one's trauma.

Aha, maybe a resolve. i will try this and fingers crossed it could work. Good idea, too simple eh!!

Oh dear, I can see me having problems soon then. We've issued iPads to the execs for board meetings and such.

This is going to be fun.....

So far I only know about the YouTube app. If they use this, yep problem. there may of course be other changes that are hassle.
Although I must say the system does appear better, but only in presentation. I will reserve finer judgement......

Apparently for iPhone only, not iPad.

I think it's all down to Google and Apple not getting along, hence the switch from Google maps to TomTom maps and the removal of YouTube. The new 3D feature of the mapping is pretty awesome, but of course you lose street view which is a bit of a pain. According to my neighbour though there's a street view app you can download separately somewhere.

Just downloaded this:

http://itunes.apple.com/app/youtube/id544007664

onto my iPad.....even though it's for the iPhone just hit the "2x" button in the bottom right of the screen and it should work.

Agreed, this update is the worst update Apple have made in recent years. It's a big step back rather than forward.

These big companies are just stupid, it's like kids in a playground telling on each other.

The maps are awful, I use it a lot for work and also house hunting (street view) but now it is completely useless for what I need. Luckily I have a Galaxy S3, so all is not lost.

Other than the new maps app looking rubbish compared to Streetview, what gets me is the number of errors that they have made. It amazes me how companies can make whole towns dissapear or change name!!!!

Search Dudley on the new maps and you will find it.....7 miles away from Dudley. They appear to have decided that Hagley is a rubbish name so replaced it with the name of Dudley!!! :D

I'm not updating until they fix the problems, or the old Google apps are available for download.

This is just comedy genius:

Thanks for the tip, it does work (sort of). But the screen will only display in portrait and will not rotate.

I've decided to do a 180 after this, none of these things were broken and hence didnt require fixing. I'm going to buy an S3.

Update.
There is an App called "Jasmine YouTube" and this works very well. All free on AppStore.
As for the mapping..... Knackered it. Bookmark Google Maps. How did TomTom ever allow this farce

Tom Tom only supplied the data. Apple wanted to control the whole User Experience and Interface. Google were/are making a ton of money from their map data and adverts, but Apple wants a slice of that pie (in relation to user data primarily). However, Google has spent years and millions refining the map service whereas Apple have tried to jump to go straightaway. Of course things will improve rapidly but its most annoying for Apple users to have software which is incomplete.

You can download the iPhone one but you have to search for it via safari.

I've not read the whole thread but I ran the update on my iPhone the other day and it killed my phone. I couldn't get any operation out of it. No phone calls, no messages. Absolutely nothing! Had to restore several times; error messages kept coming up. Eventually I got it to work and most of my stuff that was backed up came back but not all the playlists I had especially selected to have on my phone plus whatever else that didn't go into the cloud or whatever this stuff is
