View Full Version : Stiff Clutch. What next?

My clutch is really stiff. You'd struggle to pull it with 2 fingers. Seems to operate fine mechanically, but something isn't quite right.
So far I have made sure the lever moves freely, changed the clutch cable, and made sure the little arm thingamabob the clutch cable connects to under the front sprocket cover that pushes the pin in and out (deep breath!) moves smoothly. What should I be looking at next, oh wise ones? Pulling the clutch in sounds a tiny bit clunky down near the gearbox, so I suppose there is something amiss with the actual clutch. Any thoughts?
If the operating mechanism is worn or badly gunked up it can make a huge difference. My dads curvy had a really heavy clutch, despite a new cable and despite stripping, cleaning and greasing the (very worn) mechanism. After fitting a s/h unit with far less wear the clutch is lovely.

You've already fondled my clutch. Any more and it'd be a public order offence. I reckon we're gonna have it apart over the winder, fairy liquiding it into oblivion and the problem will be solved.
has it always been stiff :-)

Have you tried developing a less wimpy grip? :D
Have you checked the clutch is not grooved or damaged? Is there something else inside that is damaged, like the push rod being bent or the activator that the cable runs into being seized?

Yup, after extensive testing it's come to light that fallout needs to man up and not be such a fairy.

It still clunks in and out, so there's definitely something not quite right down there, but having tested a few bikes yesterday, it seems ok with the new cable on there. Only marginly stiffer than the others now. However, compared to the SV, it's proper stiff! Lesson learnt: don't compare a mint curvy clutch to a totally ragged gixxer one!
Aww mannnn I want a Mr Men avatar :( Oh sorry, I've nothing to add to this thread apart from 'get some nuts' as Mr T would say.
