Have you tried rebooting into 'Safe Mode' & checked the settings?

so when you click to check for updates, what does it then come up with?

could be because you don't have administration privileges, as said boot into safe mode. press F8 after BIOS and before windows starts to load then user accounts and make the your login name full administration privileges.

don't try and update a service pack by windows update.

download service pack 3 from microsoft first then burn onto a disc. there will be a howto on the microsoft site about how to go about installing it.

if you get really really stuck i have all 3 service packs downloaded you could take a trip up, bring a memory stick and ill whack them on for you that should work fine

or just down load from another pc and stick them on

You should still be able to download it from MS with IE. IE is installed as standard on all Windoze versions.

Just download SP3 from the MS site. Carries all the updates in SP2 as well.
