View Full Version : Running heated gear?
Does anyone know how safe it is to run heated gear on an SV650 K5 (or any SV for that matter) in terms of not doing damage to the alternator?
I'm looking at getting heated gloves this winter for commuting into work and as an example in terms of power, if I was to buy Keis heated jacket and gloves they require about 97W combined? The maths as well as 'should be ok' is most appreciated.
Cheers.
i have run heated gloves and vest at full power with no problems. in fact i seem to remember reading somewhere that it's actually better for the RR as it's not trying to shunt excess power so in turn runs cooler but i could be wrong.
From what I've read, Bibs is right for the stock SV reg/rec, they run somewhat cooler when delivering full load than at no load, whereas the MOSFET type are the other way round. They both end up around the same under full load, the MOSFET ones run cooler under no load.
Having said that, the reg/rec shouldn't be an issue as long as you're not trying to draw more than the alternator can generate.
Biggest issue I'd think would be the possibility of running the battery down in give/take riding, city traffic etc. You could use one of these battery guard modules (http://www.brocott.co.uk/electronic-devices/power-modules/20-amp-battery-guard-accu-saver-adjustable-settings-m148a.html) to supply the heated accessories, which if you choose the cutoff voltage appropriately would stop the battery going flat.

Be right... just watch out like embee says if you're in town or sat at tickover for ages.
I'd be more tempted to put a voltmeter on the dash than a battery protector.
Thanks for the replies. Gonna do some shopping :)
