Flippin' cute, that's what :)
Here we have our first litter of hoglets to one of our females, Conker.
They are 10 days old today, very noisy and demanding of Mum :p

I thought they were known as Pups?!
Apparently the word Hoglet was invented in the early 1990's
Very cute, are you a hedgehog farmer now? When can we expect the first batch of hog cheese?

Our cat is called Conker!
I find lots of hedgehogs out and about on nights. I've even stopped the East Lancs Road to pick up one that had rolled up in lane two!

They really do look cute and so does the mum. Don`t the spikes hurt if you handle them??

28-09-12, 08:29 AM
Claire, the spikes are all rubbery when they're babies if I remember rightly. And I you still need to handle the adults gingerly to avoid being spiked :-P
Helen, they're beautiful, you must be one proud mummy hehe. What you going to do with the babies, sell them on or keep? And what are you going to name them all if so?

British Hedgehog spikes aren't razor sharp, less so than like a wire brush or something.

The quills only hurt if they are upset or scared and they ball up.
Otherwise they lay their quillls flat.
All the babies will be socialised before going to new homes so shouldn't ball up when handled.
Maria - they will ALL be going to new homes :p

You only get spiked if you **** them off. The eldest one is Herbie and is abnormally huge (bowls ball size) but I can handle her without getting spiked. Pretty sure she's a lesbican as she bulldozers Arnie around who is our male and won't let him get jiggy.

Lol @ wideboy. I just wanted to use the verb spiked in a hedgehoggy context :-P

None are sold as yet as they haven't been advertised.
They will need to be kept inside as you can not let them hibernate as this is dangerous for them.
You would need at least a 3'x2'x2' house for them.
We keep ours in 4'x2'x2' vivariums
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g137/littlehelen_2006/d57db993.jpg
I can't see the rabbits being a problem although I wouldn't let them meet without you there as a rabbits kick could be fatal.
You can get small animal playpens which the hog could use so as not to get lost or hurt.
Although they prefer just to be curled up in your lap / under your hair :)

How much are you selling them for, I have no idea how to look after one though lol. sure you will help me. Are they better in pairs or on their own and which is better male or female?
Yeah I will keep them away from the rabbits. How big do they grow? and how long do they live?
minimorecambe
28-09-12, 11:09 AM
They have to be kept on their own as they are solitary animals.
As for male or female it is completely your choice as they is no difference in temperament.
They live about 4-6 years and grow about hand size (although as WB said one of ours is double the size of the others so they do vary)
Ours will be between £125-£150. From what I can see we have 3 Cinnicot / Algerian Brown, 1 Chocolate and 1 Albino.
They are very easy to care for.
