View Full Version : Anyone into shooting/guns?

Bit of an odd question but does anyone on here participate in shooting sports?
Me and the Mrs have just acquired our shotgun certificates and a very nice 12g shotgun which we use to do clay shooting at Manchester clay pigeon club.

I used to shoot, had a FAC for about 25 years for pistols/rifles. Knee jerk government ruined it for me.

No, but my neighbour is well into it, very experienced (parents are farmers doing it since childhood), and is off clay pigeon shooting in half an hour. Also have a friend I'll be seeing on Friday who's job revolves around game shooting and gun dog breeding. I know squat about it myself, but if you need any questions asking I can ask them.
Think Timwilky is into his shotguns as well.

Yes, still attend the family invites for pheasant. But a bit poor this year, not too many birds.

Thanks Ralph, just looking for recommendations on other clay places to go.
Any advice on cartridges is welcome, currently using Express high velocity (12ga 70mm 7.5shot). They are a budget cartridge I know but is it worth paying more?
Tim, I know what you mean about a knee jerk government, Its not fair on law abiding citizens as they tend to portray innocent people as potential killers just because they have firearms. I have razor sharp Wusthof kitchen knives at home yet I don't go out stabbing people with them!

Nah cheapies are fine unless you're doing championships or something. All technique. You can probably pay half as much again or more for dear ones and get nowhere near the benefit of firing half again as many rounds :)
I had an auto that didn't like some of the expensive ones, but it would feed the kranks (I think) own brand cheapest stuff all day long. Oh yeah henry kranks gun shop definitely worth a visit.
Not got a shotgun or ticket these days, just sub-12 air rifles, got a nice BSA ultra multi to pop the odd wabbit :)

I want to get a shotgun license soon, I went clay shooting a few years ago , really enjoyed it and I'm recently in touch with an old mate who's into guns too so fancy getting my own gear and doing it more.

Not too much edible meat left on the rabbit if you use one of those :P
Probably quite a satisfying way to thin out a rat population a bit though

You so-called law abiding knife owners sicken me. What could you possibly need sharp knives for in this day and age? We have takeaways and ready meals for a reason, and yet you clearly get some kind of sick pleasure from cutting up your own fresh food. I bet you burn it over a fire or other heat source like some kind of neanderthal. Disgusting.

I would really love a FAC but would have great difficulty in justifying a reason, I'm not a gun "nut" or anything but they do interest me. Even if I did join a gun club and wanted to to target shooting I would only imagine a .22 LR being granted where as I would want a .308:)
I did shoot an AR-15 in the USA twice a few years back and a Glock 19

I've been into shooting in one form or another for most of my life. Currently have a SGC and am the owner of 3 shotguns - all 12 bore. One is my son's gun but he's too young to have a certificate of his own. We go out clay shooting every now and then and will hopefully be getting the roaming on 1200 acres of mixed farmland near Hereford for this winter.
One of the last rifles I used was a Barrett Light 50 when I was in the army. Also managed to blag a poke around in the armoury at the Army Staff College in Shrivenham way back when. They let us fir e a number of weapons including the M16 M1A1 and a WW2 vintage German Army MG42. Awesome. Great day out.

At the weekend I visited someone with three AR-15 variants, two AK 47s, a Steyr, a pump action shotgun and three 9mm Berettas in his massive gun safe. In the locked store next to the safe he had about 5k rounds of assorted ammuntion.
As you've probably guessed, I've just come back from America where this kind of thing isn't considered unusual.

I spent Sunday afternoon target shooting (I know I already said I'm not a gun person that's as exciting as my access to guns gets) in the garden (big garden, and can set up a 30 yard range) with the neighbours BSA, fixed barrel, under lever,. 22.
I really enjoyed it, and given I don't shoot, my targets were pretty impressive with my shots grouping on the target within a 50p piece (not in the bullseye but the grouping tells me that was the scope, and not me). Also, after about a half hour of taking shots and learning the wind I was consistently hitting a metal sign, and probably 10 inch square, on a telegraph pole 430 ft away (measured on GPS).
I live in the countryside and know a few farmers that would let me get some pigeons or rabbits next spring (I'm only interested in quarry I can cook), if I'm happy my targets are accurate enough over winter to get a clean kill shot.
So, I'd like to get a gun. As a teenager I had a Webley Mk111. 22, and every time I've picked up and shot a break barrelled air rifle since I've just not felt right with it, then the BSA on Sunday felt great. After some research last night I've settled on a
Weirauch HW77.
Any thoughts?
. 177 or. 22? I'm only going to get one gun that will have to do feather or fur. I should be able to group to a £1 coin at 40 yds with some practice and learning what my scope does at different ranges on my own gun, the fact I'm only buying 1 gun to be multi purpose leans my un experienced mind towards the. 22

Personally, I have a .22 which I've had 14 years, I like the extra punch but a lot of target shooters use .177.
I went to an archery place in south Wales and they did air rifle shooting too, their guns were .177 too, gas powered, 10 shot mags etc, really nice to shoot.
But they were £700 plus each.
I'll have to bring my .22 over col, I'm getting a new sight for it actually as my existing one hasn't got much distance.

Yep, you'll have to bring your gun over Phil. What make/model do you have? Will probably be next year now before I go rabbit/pigeon hunting, but we can target shoot in the garden any time. Neighbour says you need to be insured before most landowners will let you go shoot, and there's no point starting an annual policy on that until my shot is consistently accurate with my own gun and scope.

Ive got a spanish gamo expo-s, its very powerful tbh, i just happened to be in a gun shop in brum when a guy brought two in to trade with the shop, i bought it straight off the shop as soon as the guy had left.
The other gun he sold was above the legal limit for fps so i suspect he had also 'tuned' my one.
Im not in to shooting live targets (well maybe the odd human lol) so just targets are good enough for me.

Just be warned that if it is above 12ft/lb's you may as well have an AK-47 if the law finds out!

The CPS and court won't give a flying f*** who modified it, your gun, your record...
If you suspect it's been tweaked either get it chrono'd and get it legal or don't get lifted with it!
HW77 is really nice, right up near legal out of box.
My question would be for that money why not get a decent secondhand PCP. Shop around, try airgunforum, if it's a hunting tool you'll want toys, bipod, decent silencer and scope etc. which there's a good chance of getting included.
Spring guns are nothing like proper guns, all the accuracy is in how you hold them, very dissimilar to traditional marksmanship skills. PCPs shoot just like a proper gun just recoilless.
Regarding .22 vs .177, I've got a .177 bsa ultra multi, it's alright. I wish I'd bought a .22 TBH, more for the extra shot count than terminal performance. .177 springers can kick a bit more too for the same physical reason. Old knackered BSA underlevers are easy to be accurate with when they have no kick... I've got a right old rolling block loading one myself :)

Thank guys. I'm interested in the PCP option, but had ruled it out (perhaps incorrectly) on the basis of cost and usability in the field.
I also had some nerves about buying secondhand, because I don't know enough about what I'm buying, to know if it's been looked after. Rusty barrels, knackered springs, PCP's that have had the o-ring seals knackered, etc. If I buy new, I know it's in good condition. A naive perspective I know, but being honest, that's where I am right now on the subject of guns. We are in a 'little bit of knowledge is dangerous' territory here.
I'm not sure my budget will stretch to a new PCP, plus a gas bottle, etc, etc
So we know what we are talking about in terms of budget, I can pick up a new HW77 for £300, plus the cost of a scope puts it up to about £350. http://www.allgunsdiscounted.co.uk/Weihrauch_HW77_Air_Rifle.htm
I would be interested in a recoilless gun, and I ruled out the cheaper HW57 and extended my budget because lots of reviews said it was quite hold sensitive.
Thing is the CO2 bottles themselves don't seem to come cheap? How much are refills? Where do you get them refilled? What if you've used your 40 odd shots and need a refill in the middle of a field?

Gave up on real firearms when the knee jerk reaction killed pistol shooting.
occasionally go to a clays shoot with a couple of friends but my heart not really in that to be honest.
I now 'Play' at airsoft instead, much fun to be had and some of the airsoft pistols (even though they are effectivley a smooth bore 'air powered' musket) are surprisingly accurate (exceptional grouping at 15m) these days.
the gas blowback on some of the CO2 models is so close to the real thing as to be scarey!

One of my targets from the weekend. As you can see the scope was set for more than 30 yds, but the shots were grouping nicely. Ignore the two stray shots, that was my son with a little assistance from a table, a towel, and an adult ;)

for a start they're not CO2 they're air. Ignore CO2 they're a good option for backyard plinking but not for hunting, too much temperature variation in power and other issues.
The charging setup for a PCP (precharged pneumatic ... air), is either a pump or a diving cylinder. They're not overly expensive in fact I've got a 12l steel cylinder with loads of test on it for sale...
I wouldn't worry about seals and stuff on PCPs, if you can take a mate along or something. If they shoot alright chances are they are right, they aren't particularly complicated. The biggest worry with any of them is that a previous owner has messed with them and made them FAC power...
My gun is about the worst out there for shots per fill, like around 30. This is because it has a very short barrel, is a .177, a small air tank, and is unregulated*. How many times do you need 30 shots out hunting? I don't even bother taking spare pellets, just one full magazine.
There's a BSA super10 for sale on airgunforum for £330 including optics and silencer...
*Re regulators, some guns (mine) are unregulated... the hammer opens the valve and lets 190bar squirt into the chamber. More expensive regulated ones have an intermediate pressure, say 20 bar, so the gun will be completely consistent right through the air fill. Many more consistent shots but costs more.
-Ralph-
03-10-12, 09:25 AM
Thanks Chris, will look into the cost of a diving bottle. How much are you asking for yours? Don't you need a diving certificate of some sort to get them refilled? I need to do some more research on PCP this evening

Nah some places can get funny about it I've heard but I've never had any problem. Or indeed ever been asked to show my qualifications when getting my tanks filled for diving when showing up with regulators on the cylinders etc.
I dunno, was hoping to get £100 for it but that's top end. It got hydro and visual test this time last year and hasn't been wet.

Ok, and that's what put me off PCP's in the first place, 100 for a bottle makes a £350 gun £450 in reality. I can't imagine that kind of pressure is quick or easy with a hand pump?

Depends on the size of cylinder on the gun.
My PCP was £300 ish including a cylinder and filling whip and scope.
I still have a few springers for target shooting, it's good fun and a challenge. But for clean easy kills it's PCP all the way. If I was going to get one these days I'd get a heavy gas ram powered one.
Bluepete
03-10-12, 03:36 PM
Ralph, don't get hung up on the cost of refills.
I have a Falcon PCP which allows me to choose which eye to hit a bunny in at 40 meters.
I didn't have a charging system for the first year, my local gun shop did it for £1 and with about 100 shots per fill...
I managed to find a secondhand pump for £45. Many people scoff, saying it's too much effort. Soft shoits!
PCP's are awesome. The accuracy will blow you away and if you want to put meat on the table, clean, instant kills are the ONLY way to go.
Christmas is coming up. Nudge nudge, wink wink eh?

Cool! But for a £1 a fill don't buy a .177 ultra multi whatever you do!! I think it uses more air than me on a dive to 50m...
Also to get zero'd in and practice local gun clubs often have club filling arrangements.

I've always fancied doing a bit of shooting but thought it was expensive to get it into, how much would you say it costs of a gun for example to go clay pigeon shooting?
My only experience of shooting a gun was in Thailand a couple of years ago, fired a few rounds of a Glock 9mm (I think), was good fun and I wasn't too bad either. I went back to Thailand last year and at one point the plan was to have a few days in Cambodia, there's places over there that aswell as handguns, shotguns and AK-47's, you can fire an RPG or throw a few grenades, madness! Sadly we didn't end up going.

Yeah they've all sorts of guns you can fire but it does tend to be more expensive then people crack on, I paid about £30 to fire 10 rounds of the glock, shotguns and AK's were a lot more expensive but this was a touristy area, go more into the countryside and it gets cheaper.
