View Full Version : Full M4 exhaust arrives

I went out for a hoon yesterday and rolled into MoreMoto just as they were opening the box on my new exhaust.
The headers have a kind of brutalist functional look but the tailpipe is darn purty... :smt101
Looking forward to getting it fitted and dynoed next Tuesday.
And I get to change my sig!

I'm hoping for pleasantly fruity rather than full on offensive...
It has a removable baffle at least!

They are very nice sounding until they get like this

Noise indeed...
I have a lovely new road legal M4 exhaust which is a major improvement on the original. It weighs about 4Kg less than the OEM system and has improved power output from 65.4BHP to 75.2BHP at the back wheel.
Stunning result. Looks great and sounds gorgeous.
Now for the problem. It may be road legal in the US but it certainly isn't here. It isn't marked 'NOT FOR ROAD USE' but I doubt it would pass any but the most lenient of MoT tests.
I guess I'll be looking for a cheap legal end can come MoT time. I have become the kind of person who'll spoil it for every one!

10BHP from just the exhaust? :o

10BHP from just the exhaust? :o
Yep. I'm amazed too.
It is a full system though so that means there's no cat. The header from the rear cylinder looks like a real nest of vipers to get the length equal to the front pipe and also features a link pipe. It seems that this fools the bike into thinking it has twin exhaust instead of a 2-1. Whether this is true or not I couldn't say.
It has to be said that there ain't much in the way to slow them gases down!
This was also with some dyno time to dial in the Suzuki fuel injection. Dyno bloke reckoned he could get even more with a Power Commander and a high-flow air filter but that would work out at another £500 with fitting and more dyno time so I think I'll let that lie...

Interesting :o
So this extra BHP - all down to smoother/stronger delivery (i.e torque) as opposed to top end? How noticeable is it?

I wish I knew how to post the dyno chart...
The chart shows it picks up from the middle of the rev range and by about 8000rpm it's knocking out the extra power to the redline. That's how it feels to ride too. I'm having to recalibrate the braincell as it'll pick up quicker and hold on to the power longer. The extra noise takes a bit of getting used to and is forcing further recalibration of the noggin.
Shame it's nearly back in the garage time...

So envious!
How much did this cost you in total including the dyno time etc?

Just over £800...
That's cheap for that order of benefit though!
It has to be said that I was going to spend a bunch of money on getting a project SV but then decided to improve what I had. I could push it and claim I saved myself a bunch of cash but that gets too close to the man-maths stereotype for comfort. ;)

10 Brake from a Zorst.
What type of Dyno is it?
hardhat_harry

Did you buy the exhaust from the same guy who did the dyno?
Can you post before and after charts (were they on the same day on the same dyno)?
And what type of dyno?
10Bhp is an awful lot just from a system (a bit too much really) you would expect 4-5bhp max even with the cat out.
For a race setup 10bhp is usually system, airfilter, 520 conversion and a cam change (either cam swap for curvy or curvy inlet for pointy).
I also thought Power Commanders were a bit defunct on SV's doesn't Steve Jordan just reprogrammes the stock ECU for power gains.
Btw you know you can make a dyno read anything you want dont you?

It is a Dynojet dyno run by MoreMoto in Bury St Edmunds.
Chart shows the first run as it came in the door at 65.42 and the fifth run following pipe fitting and ECU tweaks at 75.22
I understand that these things can be fluffed up to look better than they are but I can't see why they'd bother particularly. It seems they have a fairly good rep. Mind you, I believed that Lance rode clean so what do I know...
I have a dyno chart but I'm not sure how to post it.

Is it electronic or paper? First thing to do is get it into an image file then upload it somewhere like imageshack

U could always take a picture with your mobile phone then as YC says send it to imageshack or photobucket then copy the image link into a post on SV.org

Why has the dyno guy put top speed instead of revs on the horizontal axis - bizarre? especially as it looks to be a 5th gear run not a top speed run (unless your bike really does only have a top speed of 105mph)
No torque reading either
Also your chart is very flat at the top end as if the bike is not revving out properly.
And he should have reduced the scale on the verticle axis on the air fuel mix whats the point of showing a flat line
the dyno should be setup to display like this (but this one doesnt have a recalibrated air fuel either)
I will see if I can find my old SV dyno sheet
Btw the 8Bhp gain on a blackbird was gained with a micron system, K+N and power commander

Hmm. I should probably ask for a better dyno chart. I'm pretty sure they'll still have the data on file.
The buttock dyno is certainly feeling a significant difference in the way the bike picks up from the mid-range and there is a big gain in it's willingness to rev out at the top end. Actually, it pretty much crashes into the red if I'm enthusiastic with the right hand.
Given that it feels so good, looks nice and sounds nice should I even care?

As an aside I would suggest there's a bit more to be gained from tweaking a compromised budget bike than a flagship speed machine. I'd guess you'd get most benefit in the mid-range with a Blackbird.
I was surprised at how crap a standard SV exhaust is. 8.7kg seems like a lot to me and it doesn't look like the headers are that well matched.

I swapped mine for a full Titanium Akrapovic and the weight difference was amazing but with that and the other mods it ran very lean, flames coming out of the exhaust looks cool but slows you down on the straights.
Dont know about the headers being matched but the pipework is very conveluted on the standard system, I also didnt realise that the K5 had a Cat I thought that came much later.
You should care it sounds like you paid alot for your dyno time (I get a discount and pay about £20 an hour and took about 3 hours to set mine up) but didnt get the expected output even if it feels faster.

I'll be going back to see them soon so I'll have a word. I can't believe they wouldn't keep the data on file so I reckon I could get the torque curve and RPM axis done properly.
I do keep going back to the old saw about if things look too good to be true they probably are.

Just found this on the M4 site:
http://imageshack.us/a/img259/7013/d47210.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/259/d47210.jpg/)
Their dyno chart shows that they expect you to get 75.1bhp from fitting the system but they're stock run shows 70.7bhp.
Mine started from 65!
Could it be that my bike was a bit below par in the first place so it liberated more power?
Or is this chart measured from the crank...

No measured from the back wheel but a 4 - 5bhp gain is what I'd expect (like I said)
Plus they are running SAE correction and your guys are running DIN correction (I dont know much about this but I believe SAE gives a truer reading and DIN reads higher, thats why Dinojet Dynos have a reputation of running around 4bhp higher than true)

Geez! What a tangled web of wossname.
Seems a bit weird that my dyno chart would show lower than standard with the standard kit and then come out at roughly the same as the manufacturer's projection... Perhaps I had a dead rat stuck in there somewhere.
Or someone played with the data to make it fit.
I guess I'd only know if I went to a different dyno shed to try theirs.
I now know more than when I started whilst feeling like I know less.

Bit lazy not hooking the rpm pickup up.
If the correction factor was same for both and the motor and tyre was up to temp etc then no reason it is not a reasonable comparison. Though it still seems a big jump.

I'm on the Suffolk/Essex border in Sudbury.
MoreMoto (Formerly MaxMoto) are in Bury St Edmunds. I have seen another dyno-shed up in Norfolk but that seems a bit of a trek.
Thanks for posting the link to your dyno thread too.

Hi Mark.
I have a dino reading from another m4 setup (full) with a remapped power commander. Have a look. Sry about the quality, and the size. Admins, please let me know how to make it smaller.

That looks like it runs out at around 72bhp.
I guess my graph must be a few bhp over the top judging by that.
Thanks,
Mark
