Japanese translation needed.

I've bought a Hattori Higonokami kit to make and of course, the instructions on hardening and tempering the blade are in Japanese.

If I were to post up the instructions, would anyone be able to translate them for me?

Google image search, "Japanese" and the 8th result will allow you to break down the instructions so that you might be able to put them into google translator.

If not, there are loads of images of the Japanese writing with translation, so you might be able to work it out that way.

For the heat treatment, Mr. Hattori recommends 1020 to 1025C temperature for 5 to 10 minutes, then cool then temper at 240C for 90 minutes (Don't do a sub-zero quench).

I found that too. Its for the damascus blade, not the san mai blade I have unfortunately.

From this, I Googled a bit and found a site that can take a scanned image of the instructions, recognises the symbols and produces a text stream of those symbols. Cut'n'paste that stream into Google Translate and... Job done.

As a result, I've shaped the blade from the blank and hardened it. That involved heating it to 1050 celcius for 8 minutes then quenche in oil. Now it's tempering in the oven at 180 celcius for 90 minutes. Thn all I have to do is make the pocket knife up!

Ah, ok, I thought you had actually translated it yourself. So if you do know Chinese, can you suggest why Google didn't translate the digits or do Chinese numbers not get formed like a western number (possibly like Russian spoken plurals)?

Haha, hell no. I am Chinese but I have long forgotten how to write it. Did my Chinese GCSE's at 16 and never touched it since. It's not like English where you can learn to spell or pronounce words, and pretty much never forget how to do it.

Dunno why Google doesn't pick up numbers though.

Whilst you lot have been chatting, I've finished my knife!

It's not perfect, but I'm pleased seeing as I've never done anything like this before. I'll get some pics posted up...

It's a friction lock, traditional Japanese pocket knife. The blade is a core of VG10 steel with softer steel fire welded to each side. The handle on this one is stainless, but would usually be brass, engraved with the makers details. The Hattori Damascus blades cost over £100 but are beautiful.

i've tried making an ingot of folded steel to make a sword before and its not easy i had all the tools at my disposal (blacksmith) but got fed up and gave up. ended up just grinding down a bit of 10x70 SS flat bar instead. worked rather well :-)
