Engine rebuild or new engine job?

I've had my SV 650 s K8 just under a month. Had it out a cuple of times and started to get a tapping from the engine. Got home checked the oil and it was running on dregs. So topped up with just under 2.5l thinking all would be fine.

Been out for a short ride today tapping turned into grinding. Slow ride home broke down about a mile and a half away n pushed the rest :/ dropped the oil to find a load of metal in there. Thoughts?

P.s I'm skint just spent all my money on a new bike :/

depending on the severity of the damage, you might get away with a big bore kit to fix it, or you could have damaged lots of stuff.

either way its gonna cost you a few hundred quid.

I know my own daft fault for assuming that the lad who owned it previously would keep an eye on the oil... Considering it was his daily driver.... I just don't know what to do. =(

The bores and rings are very unlikely to be the bit that's broken. The crank is a favorite, and Suzuki don't sell oversized shells.

Yes it's your fault, but it's a very expensive way to learn a lesson, most people get to learn it without having to buy a new motor. Commiserations.

I'd get onto ebay, and onto the breakers yards, it'll cost a few hundred for a new engine, and you'll need to make sure it's the right year to some extent as around that time they moved from a single to duel spark head, make sure the replacement motor is correct in this regard and you should be fine.

You can either pay a garage to swap it over, or get busy yourself. I suggest the latter as it's going to cost you a lot to have a company do this for you.

Unfortunatley its always the crank on SV's that goes first if the oil has gone.

Experience would suggest the crank. To be sure you will have to start stripping it down. You any good with the spanners?

As Jambo says it isn't going to be cheap. If you can find a good crank then its possible to salvage the engine. If not then its a replacement engine, but they are far from cheap particularly for a K8. Earlier models are slightly cheaper and it would be possible to fit the bits required to make it suit your model if needed but unless you are doing it yourself the part prices alone would probably match the cost of the right model.

Found this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-Suzuki-SV650S-K6-Complete-Engine-Motor-15960miles-SV650-SV-650-S-K-6-SK6-/220946977495?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item33717752d7#ht_5045wt_808) on E-Bay. However, it is only a K6. Not sure how compatible it would be.

There is also a K5 engine (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-SV-650-COMPLETE-ENGINE-AND-INJECTOR-THROTTLE-BODIES-2005-INJECTION-/190731155018?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2c6876764a#ht_1094wt_932) on there too, but it is a little cheaper and only about 5000 more miles on it.

When the engine on my old XJ let go, we found a new one with in an hour using Part Finder (http://partfinderuk.co.uk/). That old beast cost us a fortune because it was such a wreck, but the help we got from them was pretty good.

I have a dual sparkplug 2010 engine i really want rid of! I bought it a year ago to scavange cams from for my bike and i have also sold the cam chain tensioners and clutch cover gasket. but the rest is all there, there was no metal in the oil and it turns over with a spanner on the crank. I think i could have your name on it mate. No guarentee 100% it will work but i want a LOT less than £700 for it. PM me

Replacement engine will be alot cheaper and quicker solution. If its run low on oil then it would have run the crank, poss damage to rods and also bores. Have stripped a fair number that have been run low on oil.

Just ensure the engine you buy has all its engine numbers and that they havent been tampered with.

You need 2007 onwards engine wise.

Engine swops take us about 5 hours if everything comes undone and that includes balancing the throttle bodies etc. Ideally if you get a loose motor its worth checking the valve clearances before installing it as its alot easier on a loose motor.

Surely as soon as you bought the bike that became your responsibility?

S/H engine is almost certainly the way forward, new bearing, gaskets etc will add up pretty quickly for a rebuild, especially if you find further damage.

New motor time mate! Can be rebuilt (Squirrel Hunter will testify to this) but it'll add up to almost the same as a 2nd hand lump

Thanks everybody. Had it stripped out yesterday crank seems completely seized new lump seems to be the plan. Gonna get onto roosters soon (my mini needs all ma cash this month) on the plus side got all winter to get it sorted haha.
