View Full Version : Are the TA and Reservists ready to replace the regular Army in 2020?

Well some of you know my opinion, if you don't it's along the lines of......
"Woe betide this Nation when the Majority of our defensive force is made up of McDonald's employees and school teachers, I've never had cause to complain about the TA until this Summer, working with them on Op Olympic, I found them to be lazy, Ill disciplined and their fitness is laughable!"
Well to compound this damning assessment, I was reading Soldier magazine in work today and found this.......

Sounds great, I'll join up in 2020 when they're too desperate to check my age or give me any training.
Hopefully I'll just get a land rover and a gun.

there was some good squaddies in the ta in the old days , i think nowadays the qualitys of them seem to be a lot lower , but then the same can be said for the younger generation in general lol

There's a guy I know who's in the TA, I wouldn't arm him with a pea shooter, let alone anything lethal.
He went to Iraq and managed to crash the Land Rover he was driving and broke his leg.
He was and still is a space cadet

Not all regulars are that switched on either. One lad I know set himself on fire smoking whilst filling a kero heater. The last TA I worked with I wouldnt trust with a effin spoon let alone a rifle, detachment, section
I am gonna be clicking my heels if I get offered and selected for redundancy lol

I should get my mate Brian to post his feelings on the TA!
He pays disablement pay for the TA and has taken the rest of the week off because he's had enough of the idiots... There was much f-ing and blinding when he left today...
Such a happy place my work right now :)

Wow. Whilst the TA and reservists obviously have their place, they cannot, and should not, take the place of the regular Army!

Having been to Careless' place of employment take it from me - YOU DO NOT WANT TO WORK THERE.

I think this is a wide tar covered brush you are using there,
Firstly the image you use the helmet appears to be on sideways but it does not mean he put it on sideways, it may have moved whilst he was running or it could have been knocked, they don't exactly fit snug do they?
I was part of the TA for a while and whilst I would never envisage them taking the place of the full time army, for a bunch of civi's who train less than a 10th of what the regulars do I was pretty impressed with the training and skill of the others who trained with me.
lets not all go mad and tar with the same brush shall we?

Hear, hear. I was in a TA unit many years ago, we took pride in our work and did a bloody good job. I also worked with some very good, and very bad regulars. I've met regulars who couldn't run for a bus, never mind pass a fitness test.
In our Royal Engineer unit, we were staffed by many civil engineers, builders, computer specialists etc from civvy street. These people are often on occasion far more qualified and have a broader range of experience that can add a lot of value to an army unit.
Neither TA or regular can be summarised so generally.

There will be good and not so good in every group. That doesn't mean it is in any way right to make such sweeping statements.
I am grateful for anyone that will do anything to help others.

I dont think the issue is whether the TA is a good thing or a bad thing,or whether the regular forces are stuffed with numpties who cant do the job.The real issue is whether the balance between the two is shifting too far towards reliance on the reserves leaving inadequate defence.I happen to think the TA is a really good thing, but I also think we are going too far in our reliance on it.
I've got a mate who's an ex squaddie but now in the TA and he's a decent guy. He left the regulars because of the number of idiots he said he met. And based on the ex-squaddies we have at work, I dread to think how they would have performed on the front line.
Personally I think the TA should only be used in the event of war on home soil or close to it, i.e. real threats. Not sent to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight a war we can never win or that can be solved via embargos and closure of air space etc.
But hey, this is the way the country started going when Maggie started selling off everything. The government doesn't want any commitments to anything. Following the TA we'll be looking at privatised armies supplied by Halliburton.

Dunno what all the fuss is about. Start on the map, get a gun, headshot, tea bag them, wait for the 3 minute timer to finish, go home and make a brew. Easy.
I've played COD. I'm ready. Are you?

What? They don't fit snug? Take your limp wristed civvy knot tying skills and feck off! He's blatantly put the cover on sideways, if it has moved his admin is up his ass and he needs a slap! In either case not fit for task! I'm not for one second saying all regulars are geniuses, but they are full time soldiers, I've seen stabs struggle with MATTS FFS how stupid do you have to be! On Op Olympic this summer not one of the forty or so stabs attached to us could pass a PFA, that's basics, if you can't do that as a Reg' you get 3 months to pass one if you cant it's a Medical Discharge due to being unfit for Military Service. They can't TAB and the discipline is shocking, we had one numpty that thought he could eat a flapjack whilst on parade?

Calm down dear, it's only a chat thread.
Not all members of the TA are unfit. I happen to be amazed by a very dedicated TA member I have the pleasure of knowing who regularly does massive runs and competes in triathlons.
In just the same way you freely admit that not all regulars are geniuses, you should accept that not all TA are unfit for the job.

I think I've wound Ace up tonight with too much banter. This out pour onto the Idle Banter board is regrettable.
I'll see to it that he's disciplined.

I know what your getting at! however he is on about the helmet cover! not the helmet, to wear the helmet sideways you would need a particularly funny shaped head lol
as stated by many people in this thread I have worked with plenty of motuh breathers both Regular and TA
