View Full Version : Anyone have a cylinder compression gauge?

I think I might get to the bottom of my oil burnage. Probably best to start by checking the cylinder compression. Does anyone have a gauge I can borrow? Otherwise it'll be ebay time.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! So yet another issue with the shed? If you'd have asked a couple of weeks ago, but alas I sold it on a carboot along with a lot of other tools!:(

Only "another issue" if you take an existing issue, clone it, then give it a new name and pretend you have two separate issues. Or in other words, the same oil burning issue we've joked about since day one. I can get one on ebay for about a tenner though, so might as well add that to the kit list!
i may have one kicking around, will search the garage tomorrow.
I'll bring a hole cutter and some MDF so we can make some new piston rings for the shed too

You joke, but did I ever tell you the story of the guy who made a car piston out of wood so he could sell it? Ran for a month before breaking down. Might be a plan for the gixxer.

All you need to do is stick either your thumb or preferably one of your plumbs over the sparkplug hole and crank the engine. A few hours later just compare the colour of the bruise/blood blister to see if any are different and there's your problem.
As you are daft enough to not have a twin then you may have to enlist the help of a friend to do an IL4.
Happy to help.
NOTE TO JAMMY (and other fools) :- DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

You mean the issue you almost choked us all to death with a few weeks ago when you revved your bike in front of us?
@ThunderAce, next time tell us lot before you sell tools!

Cheers Dad. All the cylinders are accessible from under the tank though and face upwards, so I think it should be fairly easy to attach the gauge (screw in type) and turn the engine over while reading it. I'll come scouting for help once the kit arrives if it's a problem.

Yes! Pretty sure it is. I would imagine it's the piston seals as that tends to be the culprit with high rev based oil burning, based on my research. I think I'll probably leave it this winter but next winter I may take my first venture into a top end overhaul.

Yeah. £11.49 delivered mate. I figured if I drove/rode to borrow one from someone else, I'd spent at least £5 on fuel doing it. Made more sense to buy one then I can keep an eye on pressure changes in any bike I own since I tend to buy tatty cheap ones. Cheers anyway.

once you've got one, you've got one.

Simon are you absolutely sure you don't already own one? I know I'm not the most mechanically gifted round here but I most definitely saw one of these in a box in your garage on Monday when we put your bike away.

That needs to remain sterile as my parts are prone to infection.
