View Full Version : Chain and Sprocket sets?
Noticed my chain is needing tightening very often now and is rusting like ****. It has loads of kinks, even mark pulled it off the rear sprocket and said it was ****ed, Its got its original set on, 15k miles.
The rear sprocket looks fine, may have a ganders at the front tommorow. Its not something im too worried about right now (as i can just adjust the chain) but i would like to get it sorted Asap!
Any recommendations for chain/socket sets/brands or just buying oem? I dont really know. Should i even bother with the sprockets and just get a chain? (shocking) This is something i could attempt myself, just thought it was best to seek advice on getting something that will last
.
On a side note, i do regularly Clean + lubricate it.
Cheers, Jam

Replace both sprockets and chain you ****
Fallout

It's sprockets, not sockets! :D
If my chain snapped now for some reason, I'd just replace the chain. That's because my sprockets are new. With your 15k (assuming its not been clocked) :-P set, you really need to replace the sprockets too.
Here's the one you want. (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Evokit-X-Ring-Chain-and-Sprocket-Kit-DID-SUZUKI-SV650S-1997-2007-S-Model-ONLY-/350608749069?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item51a1e8f20d)
As for doing the job, you can do it yourself but there are two tricky bits: the removal of the front sprocket nut can take a lot of muscle and the chain needs to be riveted together, which requires a tool. Probably best to recruit me or Nathan to give you a hand as we've both done it recently on my bike.

What keating said, theres no need to replace your socket sets when you replace your chain (although if you do I'll have the old one), there is however a need to replace your sprockets.

The cheapo 80 quid sets are good if you keep ontop of the oil'ing but if you don't they stretch and be nackarded within a few weeks.
I stuck renthal gold kit on mine and its still good as new despite what people say about renthal sprockets

Sounds like scaremongering to me young man! I put one of those DID chain kits on my curvy last year and did about 6000 miles before sale without any need to adjust. Admittedly I did clean and lube at correct intervals though. Are those renthal ones good for lazy buggers then? :smt111

I put the did on mine a few years back, I didn't lube it or look after it in anyway and it stretched like a bstard after a few months. Stuck renthal on and it only gets lubed when I wash the bike, never clean it and its been on for 2 and a half years now, still good as new.
People usually say the sprockets wear too quickly but I think mines done over 10k now
I stuck a did kit on Helens sv the other month
My bad, i put 'Sprocket' in there once and seemed to forget on the rest. HOW EMBARRASSING
Was hoping i couldd get some help on the front sprocket as ive been warned about the muscle required before
Got to say the renthals sound appealing.

I knew as soon as Gav posted that you'd be paranoid about DID being crap and all over that gold bling. :D Just bear in mind if you get the Renthal one, which probably is superior as the Baron says, you'll have to find out how it rivets together and also buy the appropriate tool. My rivetter will only do DID chains.

Don't get me wrong did kits are still good you just need to look after them, I will be sticking them on next when the current ones I have on both bikes decide to die. I've probably been lucky with my renthal kit as I've never had them before.
I don't have a rivetter, I cut the old chain off with a angle grinder and for the rivets I have an old pipe flarer that once the link is together will flare out the end of the rivet just by turning by hand. I use to rivet chains by hand with a massive punch but it took forever.

Get the blingiest most diamond encrusted one you can. It will make you even more attractive to women. You never know you may even get stood up less with a bit more blingage.
Unfortunately I have nothing useful to add on the subject.
Have you revealed the fix for your revving issue yet markus?
Apparently the bike inhaled so much blue smoke from Thunderace it had a bit of an asthma attack.
All will be revealed later this evening unless Thunderstress comes round and waterboards me sooner.

Cheeky!
@Jammy buy a new set of chain and sprockets for piece of mind, at least you know that they are all the same age/quality, if you can still adjust the chain it should be OK for the time being but if it gets to the point of not being possible to tighten you risk stripping the rear sprocket (schoolboy error on my part many years ago) and waiting around for recovery.
Easy to replace but you may need extra muscle to remove front sprocket.

That bit was in the Thread about drugs in sport.
I made the mistake of suggesting that whether people in the Paralympics were taking drugs for their condition or not was largely irrelevant when placed against other more obvious imbalances.

Just tried adjusting the chain and realised it was mostly pointless as the chain is stretched to a ridiculous degree. Will be purchasing the DID Chain+ sprockets, If Mr Keating can lend a hand with rivetting and fitting ;D?

I've done chain and sprockets on a few SVs and don't remember the front sprocket nut being particularly difficult except for on the one where the chain was missing. What am I doing differently to you lot that have trouble getting the nut off?
I normally get steel sprockets and a heavy duty Izumi chain from wemoto. Had a renthal rear sprocket before and it was fubared in no time despite having a scottoiler and regular cleaning and checks.
Good thing about the Izumi chain is it comes with a split link and a rivet link, i usually fit the split link and then ride to my normal bike shop and get them to fit the rivet link for me as my tool broke ages ago and I never bothered replacing it

I've had problems with the front nut on every sprocket set I've done, i use a old ratchet and scaffold pole and jump to van halen
Never had a problem doing them on any bike, if they've been correctly installed previously. All my SV's have been a doddle.

I think it all depends what the previous fool did when the last set was put on. The fact my bike has been low sided, was lubricated with glue and is having some engine trouble at 28k suggests it was serviced by some sort of court jester with kippers for hands. I don't anticipate the same level of tightness on Jammy's sprocket.
15K miles and i dont believe the sprockets/chain has ever been touched. But many parts on the bike have been serviced by an ape (me included) so we'll see.
Which nut is the offending one? is it just the one holding the front sprocket on? i'll make sure to attack it with shock fluid a few days prior
Fallout
15-10-12, 09:28 PM
Yeah. Front sprocket under cover. I don't think it's generally corrosion or anything holding it on, just mega torque. Won't do any harm to lube her up though. Make sure it doesn't have locking tabs or anything though if you decide to try and loosen it up.

Had it been undone before? Only ask as I had Spannerman increase my gearing by going up a tooth at the front and although his air-ratchet-thingy got the OE* nut off (with me leaning on the brake lever) the nut was badly formed and did not want to go back on. Thankfully he had a replacement but I'll bet it's not the only dud that causes grief and stupid torque to get on/off.
*the GSX had only covered 1300 miles at the time so it was unlikely to have been touched after factory assembly.
