View Full Version : If brunch is brunch, is it linner or dunch?

Fallout

A very important question. Been pondering it for at least 15 - 20 seconds, but can't decide. If I eat a slap up meal between 3 and 4 o'clock, am I eating linner or dunch?

TamSV

Afternoon Tea. :D

It'd be Linner, the earlier meal comes first in the concatenation, everyone knows that. (OK fine I made it up but I do run a convincing line of BS)
I'd also argue that Dunch sounds too much like Brunch so you'd have Linner instead on those grounds.

Just don't ignite the whole Is the evening meal Dinner or Tea debate or you'd have, is it Linner or Lea too!

I just don't think I could call eating a 16oz t-bone at 3:30pm Afternoon Tea! :D

@Brettus - I considered the chronological concatenation argument too, but thought dunch sounded too good to pass up.

@SpecialOne - You are right, on both counts. :D

If you were northern then lunch would be dinner and dinner would be supper so it would be dupper or sinner.

surely dinner is the hot meal at either lunch or tea time?

Dinner ladies being so called because they provide a hot dinner as an alternative to a packed lunch?

12-2 Lunch

3-6 Tea, possibly afternoon or high tea

7- supper.

Quite right. The concept of brunch is that it replaces both breakfast and lunch and I'm just not having that.

The course of the day should correctly run as follows;
Breakfast
Elevenses
Lunch
Afternoon Tea
Dinner
Supper
Half a packet of Rennies
Bed

You really should get a job in cricket. Of course it is afternoon tea, and should be eaten between 3.40pm and 4pm. As well as the steak do try and leave room for scones, jam, clotted cream and a slice of fruit cake.

I think in this politically correct world they would now be refereed to as child sustenance providers.

And what kind of workshy layabout is back home from work and ready for their evening meal at 5?

Hey great, another thread/poll pointing at differences between people (class in this case, with a seasoning of North/south divide to add a certain something)

A suggestion for you - go and get a rewardingjob/ life/hobby or hamster or whatever.
Sometimes the similarities between people are even more interesting!

I'm assuming this must be directed at someone else, because I have no idea how a light hearted play on words becomes xenophobic or desperate.

It's called eating. Why does it need a name?/

Every word a gem - listen to this.

And then it all falls apart:
If only work didn't insist on getting in the way of civilized behaviour.
The above is quite true - but you cannot claim any degree of civility if you spell it with a 'z'.

All wrong.

I don't have a clue if it's north or south or what class it might be,
(Sorry Messie and no offence to anyone)
but I've had tea, (in the UK) and tea is at 4:00 and consists of tea and biscuts.
I'd hate to think that was all I had for evening meal! ;)

Although at 4pm tea and biscuits would be nice, proper tea is your big evening meal, normally around tea time, which is between 5-6pm.

Tea a big meal. Is that everywhere, or is there a north / south tea?

But what if your 2 hour commute means you rarely get home before 7.30 and your main meal is closer to 9pm?

And yesterday I had an M&S chocolate mallow teacake at 2.45pm with coffee. What is the official category of this small but delicious meal?

No one sums it up better than my favourite philosopher...

“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?"”

“When having a smackerel of something with a friend, don't eat so much that you get stuck in the doorway trying to get out.”

How can you call a meal the same thing as a hot beverage? I've never got my head around that one and my butler is only just recovering from the palpatations he had when I asked him.

After checking with the rest of my staff it is breakfast, luncheon, high tea, dinner. If high tea is missed and dinner is appropriately earlier then one has supper as a light late meal.

Wideboy
25-10-12, 12:18 PM
But if there's a high tea then there should be a low tea which is tea break.

I don't drink tea so my tea is called tea, you see.

A tea break is not a meal. You may use it as an excuse to have a snack but that's not the same thing.

Don't drink tea? Really?? Good lord. You'll be telling me your valet doesn't bring you a whiskey and soda at 6 o'clock next! Shocking.
