Read this last night, I personally think they should leave well alone. Episodes 1, 2 & 3 weren't as good as the originals and knowing Disney they will completely kill it.

How can they release a new film every 2-3 years, they will completely ruin the franchise.

You see, IMHO, I don't think there is much of a franchise to ruin. For the diehard fans there will always be the books and the original films. The prequels and other bits that have been done are generally considered a bit of a monstrosity by fan groups (for example adding in the younger Anakin on the re-worked Return of the Jedi was a big no no). That will never change irrespective of what is made etc. If they make the new films and they are a success - then great, but the diehard fans will still berate them. If they are a failure, diehard fans will say I told you so......

So won't make naff all difference I don't think.

However, for ordinary peeps who just like a good action / space film and grew up with these, I see no harm. Like any film, if done well we will all love......if done badly, oh well. Shame.

The thing is though, something had to be done......for the last god knows how many years there have been new quotes etc with Lucas, "Will you do Episode 7"....."No, the Star Wars story is dead" etc etc etc. These questions have been repeated since the 80's! So fair play to Lucas to say, do you know what, payday time - sell off the full thing, kick back, retire and let someone else worry about keeping everyone pleased.

No...

Have any of you seen that episode of South Park where the boys discuss what happened to Indiana Jones? It will be the same thing.

This makes me very sad, they are taking an iconic story from my childhood and fouling it, like an adult nappy on an incontinent tramp.

Disney aren't that bad.... When you consider the fact that Disney Own Marvel and all the films have been fairly good with the Avengers actually being very good.. Disney aren't all that bad and have potential to do something decent with the franchise. Besides it can't be any worse than what has already been done with it and as Drew has said... people will moan either way, its in our nature.

i think it's a good thing.

if they are going to start a whole new saga then they had better hurry up as the actors who were in the originals are older and to me it seem like a perfect time to cross it over to new actors who could continue on and potentially create a whole host of new films. TBH it's boring having to watch the same story over and over and i would like to see some fresh material brought into the mix. personlay i enjoyed ALL the films and take them for what they are 'a film' and for me it's all about escapism from the norm. lets face facts Disney make good films.

i was fortunate to see the originals at the cinema when i was younger and feel no malice towards what Lucas done to the originals as it made them worth watching again.

if Disney do decide to continue the saga i will look forward to watching what they come up with.

It's just a cash cow. I find it hard to believe that there is anyone really passionate about the franchise convinced they're going to do the original trilogy justice. The newest 3 were crap, these new ones will be crap, so I don't care. :)

To be fair to disney their last sci fi - John Carter wasn't actually that bad.

They cant do much worse than the last three star wars and last Indiana jones so I'm thinking this is a good thing, George Lucas has proved in the last decade that his best days are behind him, far behind him, this can go one of two ways. An improvement or an irrelevance, we already have at least one bad film in each franchise, so throw a few more in and pan for gold why not.

George Lucas is to be creative director on the new films so he hasn't let go of it completely

I really enjoyed John Carter and can't understand the bad press it got.

Not sure about the bad press since I never read reviews but it was another waterworld issue. Made a lot of money but cost so much in the first place it couldn't break even.

The only issue I had was their idea of the physics behind him being able to jump so high but not mercilessly destroy any creature attacking him... Didn't make sense to me.

Never seen it, so went off to watch a few clips. I think I can safely say you can give your "rules need to make sense" argument a rest this time Ad! That film looks just like all the new star wars movies, with soulless CGI and ridiculousness in every scene. Jumping high is the least of it's issues!

I don't mind ridiculousness, it's inconsistent ridiculousness that gets me.

If you say his legs are powerful enough to spring him hundreds of meters into the air then that's fine by me (despite the gravity differences probably not being that great, I don't expect Edgar to have known that back then) but if he can do that then a single kick from him ought to be enough to pretty much mince anything it connects with, and the other creatures wouldn't be throwing him with the same power he throws them.

I care.

I don't expect you to care but it makes a film jarring for me if its not internally consistent.

If you can watch a film without noticing then so much the better.

internally consistent, lol

i take films for what they are and like everyone else i have my likes and dislikes. if i don't like a film i can turn it off or walk out the auditorium.

spank, on a side note as am curious.. what is your favourite film?

I couldn't name just one but my film collection is decidedly odd.

What I dislike is when I'm watching a great film and it does something silly that shakes me out of my absorption and into thinking 'that's stupid'.

Incidentally I LOVE Robin Hood price of thieves because it starts as it means to go on (also I'm a lot harsher critic of sci-fi than other stuff)

see the 'that's stupid' is all part of the magic :-)

the one that gets my goat is the films that they never do the sequel to like The Last Air bender and The Golden Compass. i thoroughly enjoyed those films and was pizzed off that they never finished the story and to me that's like walking into a book shop buying a book and the assistant ripping half the pages out.

Like I said, I like stupid in films like weird science but now when they're trying to be logical and fail.

I'm happy with any film that sets its rules and then lives by them, it's the ones that break their own rules that annoy me, which fallout well knows and what he was talking about.

Star wars for the next generation. I saw all the originals at my local ABC.

The next film is to be set on Pluto and features Donald Duck, The Empire Strikes Quack.

Then the one after will be set in the Mufasa system in which Buzz Lightyear makes a cameo appearance.
