Just a time lapse video I shot on Friday of an oak tree being removed opposite my flat. I loved the fact they craned the tree surgeon up there!

Beats any zip-line or tyre swing I've been on!

Wow- that's Fishponds, isn't it?

Jeez- I grew up around here, so that's a big change to note- the two trees are a big part of the park entrance there. (I live up near the opposite end of Fishponds).

There's been a bit of work in Weybridge outside my office too in respect to 'dangerous trees' and at Oakhill.

I do wonder what is meant here- are the trees actually likely to fall, or is health and safety so worried now that people shouldn't even look where they're walking where the roots lift the pavement. Who will people sue? Mother Nature? :D

I love time lapse! How did you set the Camera to take that?

I think it's rather sad seeing a beautiful tree taken down whatever the reason (and I'm sure it must have been a good one). I like a good tree.

Yep! It had a couple of large fungi growing at the bottom of it which apparently eat away at the inside and cause the tree to hollow out and thus eventually fall over. Luckily the one next door to it is ok for now. Tis very sad. I find the video quite barbaric in a way being cut down like that :(

I used my Drift HD170 Stealth helmet cam which has a repetitive photo capture option. It took one photo every 10 seconds and then I used Sony Vegas to render them at 10 photos per second. Kept crashing as the memory struggled to handle the 1400 or so photos!

Hey that's great work Stenno, very creative. As with others, very sad to see the tree go.

Good piece of film there Stenno!

Comment about the tree hollowing out is interesting. Any tree like an oak, left long enough, will hollow out. It's the natural progression of growth for hardwood trees. The wood in the centre is dead wood, it's the outside portion, or sapwood which is the living part of the tree. A hollow tree is more flexible and generally better able to stand big storms. During the big storm of 1987, most of the trees blown down or snapped in Windsor Great Park were trees with solid stems, whereas many of those left standing were old trees with hollowed out trunks.

Ah! Maybe they're just making money out of the council then :(

Nice film. I was expecting at least an "Alfred Hitchcock" type cameo appearance, but hey ho. ;)

+1 on the comments about hollowing out of trees, perfectly normal process. I think certain councils get scared of accusations of neglect and liabilities so react rather aggressively. On the other hand where people have been killed/injured by falling trees the council usually gets lambasted by the press, so understandable to some extent.
