So the little one needs an Owl puppet made for school, we need to make it's head, so the wife inflated a balloon, mixed water and flour 2:1 + a good lug of PVA added strips of newspaper and layered up the balloon with 7-8 layers, now it's dry it is still very flexible? Too flexible for a 5yr old to handle!

Any arts and crafts gurus out there?

Google has been less than helpful! HELP! This needs to be finished in time for school tomorrow!

Unless your doing it as a solid lump papier mâché is better done over a chicken wire frame.

Also a lot thicker would be better.

Where do I buy chicken wire at this time on a Sunday?

A Garden centre if you're lucky.

Or you could just layer it up more and hope for the best.

Use more glue and more paper, if it's done right you shouldn't need wire, it should be solid.

More newspaper and wallpaper paste. Or put another balloon inside it and let that give it some structure unless of course Miss Ace needs to get her hand inside its head.

All is well!:D Though to myself that there may be moisture trapped between the dry outer layers and the balloon, so popped the balloon and yep soggy on the inside! So balloon removed and 10 mins with the Mrs' hair dryer and Bob your mothers brother nice and solid.:D

Owl now has feathers, ears, a beak, googly eyes and a swivelling head! Next step flapping wings! Should have watched more Blue Peter when I was a nipper!

Cheers for the suggestions!:D

As requested,

11716

had a nightmare with the feathers, it looked like a drowned blackbird! So we had to resort to fur:( But the head rotates 360 thanks to a wooden spoon and the wings flap (lollypop sticks and string), but most disappointing of all is, we could have used bigger googly eyes as it now looks like a startled furby!
