View Full Version : Dummy alarm LED wiring please.
Hi all, I can't seem to get my head around this.... I've got a dummy flashing alarm LED for my sv, I want it to flash when the ignition is OFF and not when it's switched on! Can't find anything on a google or a forum search as it just comes up with using relays to turn it on with the ignition?
Any help much appreciated! :)

Surely if you wire it direct to battery, it will come on with no ignition.
Having it flash when running will not be a drain on battery.
You could fit a relay to switch to a dead circuit when power on, this could kill the power to your unit.
just a thought

You could modify the ignitions parking light setting to have that turn on the LED. Or maybe some sort of inverter circuit board?

reverse a relay.
Set up a bypass on a circuit which when you power on the bike the relay kicks in an activates the bypass. Power off relay opens and breaks the bypass giving power back to the LED.
but +1 its not worth the bother tbh as the LED been on while you're riding isn't going to worry your battery in the slightest unless you only want it off because its annoying/in your eyeline etc.

Another thought, wire direct across battery and have a switch (under seat).
You could then switch off/on as required.
You could conceal a switch behind fairing

or just spend £22.98 and buy one of these.

I've had a few on each of my bikes. Works a treat with nice flashing light too.

These dont use any power at all. Could leave my old Bandit for three weeks without using it and would start without batting an eye lid. Same as the SV. Dont start that for weeks at a time and just go to it and it starts.
Also I thought there was a reason you buy an alarm? Unless you live in an area where theft is 0%

Unless you live in an area where theft is 0%only trouble is if you live in or leave your bike in a place where it might be more likely to get stolen then the alarm wont stop them taking it,and since it only takes a few minutes to disable most alarms, and the likelyhood of them letting you down is fairly high,i have had 3 bikes with alarms and they have all been taken of as they have let me or the previous owners down, and although you will never stop the most determined thieves, but you can make it harder with a good chain and lock.if the links are hardened they can be very hard to cut with bolt cutters

It's not surprising really - the electrical stuff gets turned on with the ignition on, and off with the ignition off. If you want the reverse, you'll need a relay.
As said above, if you want it to wire easily the best thing would be just wire it in so it's on all the time, and don't have it in your field of vision.
Well... i managed it! I popped into my local motorfactors and explained my conundrum, he simply smiled and toddled off round the shop and popped back with a relay that had an extra pin on the back, quite simply the extra pin works the relay the opposite way to normal and makes the powered circuit when the ignition is turned off.... cost me a fiver so pretty happy with that :) Leaving it on 24/7 wasnt really an option for me as i have installed the light just to the top left of the rev counter, and it is quite bright so would have been flashing in my face when its dark :D
Forget all the inverter, relay, re-wire nonsence. Is super-simple, I did exactly the same on my old bike.
Take LED +ve wire and connect to a permanent live via a fuse.
Take LED -ve wire and connect to the +ve side of a bulb that comes on when ignition is on (parking light if you want front flashing light or tail light if you want it on the back.
Add a spot of clear silicon to the LED then wipe it off the lens. This will stop it shorting when it rains.
When ignition off, light off. LED has perm live on one side and a connection to earth via the bulb on the other side so flashes.
When ignition is on, bulb is on so LED has 12v on both sides, no potential difference so does not light.
LED is a diode so stops current flowing backwards so does not impact the performance of anything else.
I had this set-up for years on my old curvy wired to the front parking light.
Or you can go with a normally-closed relay if you want to get far far more complex.
