It isn't damp to touch and there are no pipes etc above but my kitchen gets very hot and steamy when cooking, could this cause this?

Is the peeling patch directly above the hob or anything? It could be that the surface wasn't prepared well in that area before the top coat went on. Does Artex need a primer coat?

Artex is notoriously bad in damp humid areas, can even get it to go like a paste if it gets wet enough.
Could roll on a Pva barrier then paint it.

Is it just the paint peeling or artex with it?
If its the latter then was the base pva'd prior to artexing?

ceiling emulsion. in any humid / high steam areas use specific bathroom / ceiling paint

Patch is just randomly in the middle of the room.
Base was PVA coated prior to Artexing.
Think I will coat the patch in PVA and use a bathroom paint to stop it reoccuring. Weird how its only in one patch though.

Must admit I don't like kitchen and bathroom paint, it creates a skin which is a nightmare to repair a patch or dink if you should need to.
Make sure you don't have another source of moisture for that one patch, don't know what room is above it but I'd still check there is no leaks from anything.

I don't like bathroom paint either.
Directly above the patch is a cupboard on the upstairs landing, there is pipes under the floor but they are way over to the left and right of it for the bathroom and one of the bedrooms, it seems to just be a random patch.
There is definitely no leaks above as there is nothing to leak. May try PVA over is and re patch it. Strange though we used same paint in bathroom which had the ceiling done at the same time and that is fine despite being much more steamy and humid.
Kichen humidity is one of the worst things for chest infections.Get a vent in there!

I know, we have only been in there 10 months hence all the decorating, we have a cooker hood but I found when decorating that it just sucks air in and blows it out above the unit so doesn't actually go out the wall which is a bit pointless IMO. It is on the to do list as it were.

You might want to dust those cobwebs whilst you're at it.
