I bet that would not be as soft as you'd think!
Bit of target fixation going on there or did he think it was going to bounce t'other way?

No the mattress when it left the truck was just slightly into his left field of vision, so his instinctive reaction was to go right. Remembering that the video is slowed down he did a damn good job of avoiding it. There will have been a fair bit of pant pooing going on at the same time.
Typical adrenaline reaction after he tried to tell the truck driver though, first thing he did after that was open the throttle and go faster. Best thing to do after an incident like that is stop, get off, sit down for a few minutes until the adrenaline wears off, even if you think you're OK and you don't need to. If you do that you'll probably find the adrenaline is making your muscles shake, which demonstrates that your affected by it even if you feel that you're not. It's not the time to be riding a motorbike, never mind riding it faster.

Years ago one of my mates stuffed a mattress on the big rack thing on the roof of his defender. We figured because we couldn't get it back out without a fight it would transport with no tying down.
Ainley Top is a roundabout off the M62, the dual carriageway to Hx is a steep hill, which now has 50mph speed cameras. Can you imagine the speed a double mattress gets upto when flying off the roof of a Landy?
It was like Ali Babas flying carpet
And we had to drive up the hill, and back down it to retrieve it from halfway down the drop at the side of the road.
Fella is lucky to have dodged it. They fly fast! Remember if you hit a vehicle head on you take your speed and the other vehicles speed..... That's a hell of a hit with something the size of a barn door!

Well just to be pedantic didn't the mattress fly off a motor going the same way? In that case the "speed" of the impact would be how much the mattress had slowed down due to air resistance.

Yes, this is true, however, the mattress was still travelling at a given speed towards the rider, regardless of wether it had slowed from air resistance. It was launched off a vehicle at speed and wasn't stationery.

The only reason it was going towards the rider in that frame of reference was because it had slowed down. If it did not slow down it would have been hovering above the pickup truck.

I guarantee you that mattress is travelling in the same direction as the bike when he dodges it, only difference is the biker is heading in that direction still faster than the mattress.
Guy does well in the real time replay based on the view of the camera. I say he does well, he seemed to gamble right then react and come back left. Had he gambled left from the start it wouldn't have looked anywhere near as scary.
You would not want to be that truck driver had your unsecured load hit me out on the road, should have his licence revoked on the grounds of been too inconsiderate to be eligible for one.
